Video transcript

Jackie: I was really sure I wanted to go here. The only uncertainty was whether I’d be able to afford it.

Amran: We visited when I was in eighth grade, and it just stuck in my head—I knew I wanted to come to U-M.

Amber: Growing up, there weren’t a lot of people who looked like me where I was from. I’d go around saying, “Hey, you can go to college. College is an option for you.” Luckily for me, I was good at school, so it was easy to envision.

Jackie: Choosing U-M was a big decision, especially in terms of finding scholarships and ways to make it more affordable. My high school guidance counselor helped me look into scholarships from our school and local organizations. And U-M was really good about financial aid. They even offered a scholarship for engineering students from the Upper Peninsula.

Amran: There’s also a center in downtown Detroit, and when I contacted them, they told me about the Go Blue Guarantee. That really helped—if your family makes less than $65K a year, you basically get a full scholarship. Even if you make more, they still help you out.

Amber: To be honest, college was hard for me. I worked two or three different jobs the whole time I was here. But there was no way I was leaving without that engineering degree. Not having to worry about tuition or loans once I graduated lifted a huge stress—especially since I decided to go to grad school. That made the choice easier.

Jackie: No matter what problem you face, you can get through it. It’s not easy most of the time, but there are always people here to help you.

Amber: There are so many different places to find support. There are people who look like you, people who understand you.

Jackie: The people I found here kept me driven, always pushing me toward bigger and better goals.

Amran: I’ve met so many friends here who basically changed my life. We were like a family—and we still are.

Amber: Now I can proudly say I’m a graduate. I worked hard for it. I earned it.

All of our engineering undergraduates, including transfer students, are considered for merit-based scholarships once they’ve been admitted to the University. The first steps of your college scholarship journey are to set up a College Scholarship Service (CSS) profile and fill out the Free Application for Federal student aid (FAFSA).

Go Blue Guarantee

The Go Blue Guarantee makes education more affordable for Michigan residents. If you qualify, your financial aid will include scholarships and grants totaling at least the cost of tuition and mandatory university fees assessed each semester.

U-M will pay full undergraduate tuition and mandatory university fees for up to four years for students who:

  • are eligible for in-state tuition
  • are eligible to apply for financial aid
  • have family incomes of $125,000 and under & assets below $125,000 (as well as tuition support for some families earning more)
  • are pursuing their first bachelor’s degree

Student employment

The Student Employment Office has opportunities that can fit within your schedule and meet your needs.

Graduate funding

Our graduate students are critical contributors to our research and education mission. We get great grad students and we do everything possible to take care of them.

PhD students

Our PhD students receive full funding, which includes a tuition waiver, monthly living stipend, and health insurance. You may want to supplement that funding with additional scholarships and fellowships. Our biggest advice is to apply for that funding early.

Exact funding amounts vary by department. The package can come from a combination of sources, including fellowships and research and/or instructional jobs. To get a better idea of what your stipend might look like, get familiar with our funding sources.

Master’s students

There are fewer funding opportunities for Master’s students, but some options are available. Check with your department to learn more about any fellowships, GSI positions or GSRA positions open to master’s students. Start looking early.
