Sequential Undergraduate/Graduate Studies (SUGS)
A uniquely efficient way to experience grad school at University of Michigan Engineering.
The Sequential Undergraduate-Graduate Studies (SUGS) program — sometimes referred to as a combined BS/MS degree, an accelerated master’s program, a fast-tracked master’s degree or a 4+1 program—is a way for current U-M undergraduate students to earn a master’s in as little as one year of study after your bachelor’s degree. You may even be able to complete your master’s online!

Why choose SUGS?
Save time and money with a faster master’s
It’s that engineer mindset—design an academic plan that makes the most of the time and money you’re investing in your degree.
You’re committed for 4; what’s 1 more?
You’ll complete both of your degrees in around 5 years; shorter than the average 6 years it can take to complete a bachelor’s and master’s degree separately.
Keep the momentum going
You’re already counting credits—make them even more efficient by counting them towards your master’s degree.
Advance your career—get your master’s
Unlock more options after graduation. A SUGS degree is just efficient engineering education.
“SUGS gives you an opportunity to learn things that you want to, just for an extra little bit of time, and you’ll get a whole new degree that will help you a whole lot in the work force.”
Lea Russo
(ME) SUGS graduate
“It’s about having a college mindset and using it while you still have it, instead of setting yourself up for a drastic change later on.”
Ricardo Lopez
(BSE NERS ’20, MSE ’21), SUGS graduate
When do I need to decide?
While you can start exploring SUGS and talking with your undergraduate advisor as early as sophomore year, most students formally express interest and develop a plan with their advisors
between mid-junior and mid-senior year.
1
Late sophomore
Explore programs; note minimum GPA requirements; make sure your grades are on track.
2
Mid-junior to mid-senior
Meet with advisors (graduate and undergraduate) and make a plan.
4
Second semester senior
Apply to the graduate program by the deadline.
Can I pursue a master’s degree outside of my current major?
Yes, you can consider a master’s different from your bachelor’s! Many departments accept master’s students from other majors. See which departments accept SUGS students with your major.
