Gifts of Brokerage
A gift of your brokerage account, such as Fidelity, Schwab or Merrill Lynch, is an easy way for you to make a gift to U-M. Many people have assets remaining, undesignated, when they pass.
Here are some of the potential benefits:
- The full appreciated value will pass to U-M.
- You maintain control of the brokerage account assets during your lifetime.
- You avoid probate with respect to your account holdings.
How to transfer your brokerage account assets
A transfer on death (TOD) plan will ensure that your account assets will come to U-M. Your brokerage firm can provide the appropriate beneficiary designation documents. Your estate may benefit from an estate tax charitable deduction.
