Criteria
Your prospective graduate program is your definitive source for admissions criteria, but in general Michigan Engineering graduate programs consider the following:
Grades
Cumulative undergraduate GPA is an important factor in master’s and Ph.D. admission consideration. Programs are competitive; individual departments can provide more information about GPA minimums.
Recommendations
- Letters of Recommendation: Three letters from people who are familiar with your work, especially faculty members who know your potential and talent in the classroom and the lab.
Statements
- Statement of Purpose: 1-3 pages. Statement about your academic and research background, your career goals, and how Michigan’s graduate program will help you meet your career and educational objectives
- Personal Statement: 500 words or fewer. This is not the Academic Statement of Purpose, but a discussion of the personal journey that has led to your decision to seek a graduate degree.
Tests
Graduate Record Exam (GRE): Required for some master’s and PhD programs. The college has no minimum score requirement, but individual departments may set minimums.
-
- Scores are valid for five years. We accept scores that expire during the application process providing the application is submitted before the expiration date.
- Institution code: 1839
GRE is required for the following PhD programs: Biomedical Engineering (BME), Computer Science and Engineering (ECE), Engineering Education Research, Industrial & Operations Engineering (IOE), Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), and Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME).
GRE is required for the following master’s programs: Computer Science and Engineering (ECE), Engineering Education Research, Master of Science in Engineering, Industrial & Operations Engineering (except for recent U-M engineering graduates), Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), and Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering (NAME).
GRE is not required but strongly encouraged for the following programs: Master of Engineering (M.Eng.), Integrative Systems + Design (PhD)
English Language Proficiency (TOEFL, MELAB or IELTS): Required for applicants who are non-native English speakers. See Rackham website for details.
