Beginning in 1868, Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan was just a two-room lab run by a single professor. Now, in its 150th year, the department is home to 72 tenured or tenure-track faculty, 21 research faculty and lecturers, 55 staff and more than 16,000 living alumni. It continues to be a world leader in research and education, covering diverse areas such as health systems, emerging manufacturing, energy and environment, future transportation and more.

As part of its sesquicentennial anniversary, the department has hosted a number of events, including a distinguished speaker lecture series. The celebrations culminate in an all-day event on Sept. 21. Activities on campus will include panels discussing Mechanical Engineering’s rich history at the University and what’s on the horizon. Plus, join open house tours of ME research facilities and learning spaces and check out the winning student project in the ME 150th design contest.
