International students on F-1 or J-1 Visa status must have proof of full financial backing for their entire course of study.
Prerequisites:
- Math: 2 years of college level Calculus I, II, III, and Linear Algebra and Differential Equations
- Physics: 2 semesters or one full year of Calculus-based Physics with labs
- Chemistry: One semester of general college chemistry with lab
- Computing: One semester of computer programming, C++ preferred. Some departments will accept other programming languages. Click here to see a list of accepted programming languages.
- English: A minimum of four (4) credits of English Composition.
Some departments have different of additional requirements:
Industrial Operations Engineering (IOE)
- Math: IOE majors must have a Linear Algebra course equivalent to U-M MATH 214, not a combined Linear Algebra and Differential Equations course equivalent to U-M MATH 216
Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering

English Proficiency:
The University of Michigan requires a high level of proficiency in English, so that all students are able to participate fully in University life, both in and out of class. The University accepts the results of the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or the International English Testing System (IELTS).
English Proficiency minimum scores:
Scores are valid for two years. Expired scores will not be accepted. Only official test scores received directly from the testing agency will be accepted.
Minimum scores required for each test are listed in the table below:
| Test | Scores |
| TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) |
PBT (paper-based TOEFL) 570-600 (section scores of at least 57)
iBT (internet-based TOEFL) 88-106 (section scores of at least 23 on reading, listening, and speaking, and at least 21 on writing).
|
| MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) | 80-85 Final score, with section scores of at least 80 |
| IELTS (International English Language Testing System) | 6.5-7.0 |
Exceptions to the English proficiency tests include only lifetime residents of Australia, Canada (other than Quebec), New Zealand, United Kingdom, or the United States (other than Puerto Rico). Students who have recently and successfully completed at least four years of rigorous academic studies in one of the countries listed might also be exempted if SAT critical reading scores are in the mid-600 range. An admissions counselor will make that decision based on the level of academic achievement.
