Current Term Workshops

These sessions are for engineering faculty, graduate students, and other interested parties as listed. All sessions will be held in the Johnson Rooms of the Lurie Engineering Center.

All events are free of charge.

Workshops for Faculty Only, Grad Students/Postdocs Only, and All Interested Parties.

For Faculty Only

Teaching with Variety: Helping Students “Get it” (Click here to register)
Cindy Finelli, Director, CRLT North
Tuesday, November 3, 2009, 12:00pm - 1:30pm. Johnson Rooms, Lurie Engineering Center
Lunch is provided.

Students are not all alike–they have different strengths and preferences for the ways they receive and process information (i.e., learning styles), and these can affect their academic success. This workshop will enable faculty to understand more about models of learning styles and to develop classroom strategies to help students build their skills in both their preferred and less preferred modes of learning.

Creative Problem Solving (Click here to register)
H. Scott Fogler, Vennema Professor of Chemical Engineering
Monday, November 16, 2009, 11:30am - 1:00pm. Johnson Rooms, Lurie Engineering Center
Lunch is provided.

Helping students hone and enhance their problem solving and creative thinking skills is an important goal for many instructors. In this session, Dr. Scott Fogler will describe ways he works to develop these skills in ENGR 405: Problem Solving and Troubleshooting in the Workplace and CHE 344: Reaction Engineering and Design. Specifically, he will present techniques to ensure one defines the real rather than the perceived problem, will introduce the use of lateral thinking to generate solutions to properly defined problems, and will offer practical strategies for teaching these concepts to students.

Actively Engaging Students in Engineering Sections and Labs (Click here to register)
Eugene Daneshvar, Matt Gibson, and Marcial Lapp, Engineering GSI Mentors
Monday, September 14, 2009, 11:30am - 1:00pm. Johnson Rooms, Lurie Engineering Center
Lunch is provided.

In this session, participants will practice a variety of active learning methods and learn about the research-based evidence for their effectiveness. Participants will also discuss ways to implement these strategies in their own class.

Handling Sticky Situations with Students (Click here to register)
Tabish Maqbool and Arleigh Waring, Engineering GSI Mentors
Thursday, October 1, 2009, 2:30pm - 4:00pm. Johnson Rooms, Lurie Engineering Center

In this workshop, participants will learn how to handle unexpected situations in the classroom and beyond, with an aim to develop a conducive learning environment.

Developing a Productive Relationship with your Research Advisor (Click here to register)
Amor Menezes and Fernando Tavares, Engineering GSI Mentors
Thursday, October 15, 2009, 11:30am - 1:00pm. Johnson Rooms, Lurie Engineering Center
