The IBM Stem Entry Point Program

A Summer Program for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students

What is it?

The IBM Stem Entry Point Program is an exciting, 2-day non-residential pilot program for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students who will complete the 9th, 10th or 11th grade by June 2008. Are you interested in learning how safety features in automobiles are developed? Have you wondered how medicine, plastic and cosmetics are made? Does dissecting a computer seem like fun? This program is for you! During the program you'll learn about various fields of science and engineering. Students will tour various research facilities and engage in discussions with engineers and scientists.

This project is sponsored by the Women in Science and Engineering Program at the University of Michigan, College of Engineering and IBM.

When and where is it?

The IBM Stem Entry Point Program will be held on the U of M campus in Ann Arbor. Thursday. July 24-Friday, July 25, 2008.

Students attending the program will meet each morning at the College of Engineering on the UM campus. IBM Stem Entry Point Program students will be accompanied while on campus by UM faculty, staff, and students and ASL interpreters.

Who is Eligible to Apply?

You are eligible to apply for The IBM Stem Entry Point Program if:

  • You completed the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade by June 2008
  • You have an interest in engineering or science
  • No previous experience science or engineering is required
  • You are Hard-of-Hearing or Deaf

What is the cost?

The Stem Entry Point Camp is tuition-free, but requires a 25.00 registration fee. This fee will be returned at the end of the first day if the camper attends. The registration fee is forfeited if the camper does not attend. It includes 2 full days of program activities from 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM plus all instructional costs, supplies and materials and lunch.

How do I apply?

Complete the entire student application form. Use black ink or a typewriter. The application will be available by February 1, 2008.

Applications will be reviewed by May 23, 2008. Applications will be reviewed upon receipt and all applicants will receive a response letter within by the end of the following week. Students selected for the program will be asked to pay their registration fee by June 27, 2007.

Please Note: A completed recommendation form is required.
