The Class of 2009E Legacy Gift

The area outside of Cheseborough Auditorium underwent a recent renovation and redesign to meet the needs of engineering students. The new student common area now welcomes students with ample, comfortable seating for socializing or studying, and a gathering space around the warmth of a fireplace.

Inspired by the welcoming student lounge and the abundant artwork across North Campus,  the Class of 2009 decided to add to the student lounge by giving a piece of artwork as our class gift.  The actual piece of artwork has been chosen by the Senior Class Committee. Read more about it below.

Make a gift or pledge of any amount and…

  • your name will be listed on the Senior Class Website,
$100 - $499
  • your name will be permanently displayed on a plaque in Chrysler Commons,
  • you will also receive “any amount” recognition.

$500+
  • you will become a member of the Leaders In Engineering Annual Giving Society, and
  • receive all of the previous recognition benefits.

About the Artwork

Worm with a Spur, 1987

ALAN SHIELDS, American, 1944 – 2006
Worm with a Spur, 1987
Handmade paper with collage, 28 x 28 inches
Edition: 10/15
Published by Tandem Press, U of Wisconsin, Madison, WI

Alan Shields' outlook can be defined as the breaking down of traditional boundaries. His interest in grid systems and the manipulation of them is not altogether new, yet unlike other artists, they remain a constant element in his art.

Shields' printed works are created from a variety of techniques: handmade paper, serigraph, relief, embossing, perforation, sewing, and found objects. In combining these elements with Shields' lyrical and playful sense of color, the total effect for the viewer is tremendous.

Alan Shields died in 2006.
