All new students are considered for merit-based scholarships offered through the College of Engineering after formal admittance into the University. No separate application is necessary since consideration is based upon the academic and extracurricular information listed on your application for admission

(NOTE: The Gloria Wille Bell and Carlos R. Bell Scholarship, the Joseph M. Geisinger Scholarship, and other external scholarship opportunities listed below DO require a separate application, because they have specific criteria the donors of the scholarships were seeking when the scholarships were established. Many of the external opportunities have scholarship committees that exist outside of the College of Engineering).

Candidates will receive notification of their status, need for additional information, or selection before mid-April each year. Most merit-based awards are referred to as "Engineering Scholarships of Honor" and are renewable. All new student scholarships are funded through College of Engineering endowments donated by generous alumni and friends and the annual operating allocation.

Advocates for Latino Student Advancement in Michigan Education (A.L.S.A.M.E.)

This scholarship is intended to recognize and support students who, through their past activities or educational aspirations, have indicated an interest the advancement of underrepresented groups in the United States.

Criteria:

1. Be a high school senior.
2. Graduate from a high school in Michigan.
3. Admission to a college or university in Michigan for Scholarship Year.

Gloria Wille Bell and Carlos R. Bell Scholarship

The Bell scholarship application period for 2012-2013 is now closed.

Scholarships will be awarded to first year students entering the College of Engineering or the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts who are enrolled in an undergraduate degree program in engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science, or other related scientific fields who meet one of the following geographic criteria:

1. Residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia, with a preference given to residents of the Gloucester, Virginia area;
2. Residents of one of the following counties in the state of Michigan: Allegan, Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Eaton, Hillsdale, Ingham, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Lenawee, Livingston, Monroe, Oakland, St. Joseph, Van Buren, Washtenaw and Wayne, with a preference given to residents of Washtenaw county and graduates of a public or private school in the Ann Arbor, Michigan area;
3. Graduates of the Chicago, Illinois Public School system or the Chicago, Illinois Parochial and Private School systems;
4. Graduates of the New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois;
5. Graduates of the Illinois Science and Math Academy in Aurora, Illinois.

The Bell Trust will provide scholarship support of $20,000 per year to recipients from the Commonwealth of Virginia, Chicago and New Trier High School, and $10,000 per year to recipients from the State of Michigan.

Scholarship support is for four years or through graduation, whichever is less, and annual renewal is contingent on satisfactory academic progress.

FIRST Scholarship; The University of Michigan and Delphi Foundation; FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Scholarship

The FIRST Robotics application period is now closed for the 2012-2013 academic year.

In partnership with the Delphi Foundation, the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering is awarding three $20,000 scholarships payable over four years ($5,000 per year).  The scholarships will be awarded to seniors in high school who have participated in at least one full season with a FIRST Robotics or FIRST Technical Challenge (FTC) team.  Students admitted to the University of Michigan’s, College of Engineering for the Fall 2012 semester are eligible to apply. Requirements for consideration:

1. Be admitted to the University of Michigan’s College of Engineering.
2. Submit an essay showing demonstrated leadership on a FIRST team.
3. Provide 2 letters of recommendation (one from a FIRST advisor and one from a teacher, counselor or mentor).

The Joseph M. Geisinger Scholarship Program

The Geisinger application period is now closed for the 2012-2013 academic year.

During his lifetime, Joseph M. Geisinger created a trust fund to provide support to forward the careers of students pursuing degrees in engineering at the University of Michigan. The scholarship program will provide $20,000 in annual support to students selected from the following states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington or Wyoming.

• Scholarships will be awarded to first year students entering the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
• Prospective students should plan to submit their application for admission to the University of Michigan as early as possible (Applications for admission take 10-12 weeks to process).
• Recipients must be enrolling at the University of Michigan and pursuing an undergraduate degree program in engineering.
• Scholarship support is for four years of undergraduate support or through graduation, whichever is less.
• Annual renewal is contingent on satisfactory academic progress and maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.0.

Michigan Branch of Telluride Association (MBTA)

The Michigan Branch of Telluride Association brings together students who share a passion for intellectual interchange, a dedication to improving public life, and a commitment to self-government. Telluride Association owns and operates a large house near campus, in which approximately thirty University of Michigan undergraduate and graduate students with a variety of academic backgrounds, political views, and cultural perspectives cohabitate. Michigan Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE) Scholarships for High School Students

The MSPE application period is now open for the 2011-2012 academic year.

MSPE awards scholarships annually to high school seniors interested in pursuing an engineering degree. They must have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the 10th and 11th grades and must have a minimum ACT score of 26. Applications are available from high school counselors, local MSPE chapters, and the MSPE Central Office. Sidney J. and Irene Shipman Scholarship

Prospective students with high academic achievement who have been admitted as first year undergraduates will be nominated for consideration through the Admissions process. Academic achievement will be determined on the basis of a set standard of high school grade point average and SAT/ACT test scores. Exceptional talent in the arts and sciences will also be considered in the nomination process.
