Churchill Scholarships

The application period for the Churchill Scholarship is now closed for 2011-2012.

The Churchill Scholarship is for one year of graduate study at the University of Cambridge in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering.   Applicants must be US citizens between the ages of 19 and 26 who will hold a bachelor’s degree but have not yet earned a doctorate in the fall of 2012.  Interested candidates should contact Elleanor Crown (ecrown@umich.edu) as soon as possible and should take the GRE general exams if they have not yet done so.  Information at: http://www.winstonchurchillfoundation.org/ and http://www.lsa.umich.edu/honors/currentstudents/scholarshipinformation. Class of 1931E Scholarship

Scholars are selected by the '31E Scholarship Committee. The Committee consists of Class of 1931E graduates, spouses and children, former Scholars, and University representatives. Scholarships are awarded based on academic record. Criteria used by the Committee are grade point average, community service, school activities, and employment experience. Relatives and descendants of 1931E members will be given priority.

The number and amount of Scholarships awarded in a year depend upon the amount of interest generated by the endowment fund. Awards are determined annually by the committee. In 2011, the award for in-state students was $11,000, and for out-of-state students $14,000. Currently, the fund supports 23 Scholars. Scholarships are awarded annually and are renewable, as long as the Scholar continues to be eligible.

Requirements for Initial Eligibility:

  • Freshmen in the College of Engineering
  • Maximum of 25 credits earned at the University
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.5

  3. All applications are reviewed by the '31E Scholarship Committee, which then selects 15-25 candidates for interviewing.
  4. Selected candidates will be interviewed in person, by the Committee, on campus; on Friday, March 23, 2012.
  5. Candidates will be notified over the summer of the Committee's final decision (usually June).
  6. Application deadline is January 24th, 2012; (11:59 PM, Eastern Standard Time).

College of Engineering Need- and Merit-Based Scholarships

The application period for the 2012-2013 academic year, is now open.

The College of Engineering has nearly 200 scholarships that have been endowed over the years through the generosity of our alumni, private donors, and friends. These scholarships are available only to currently enrolled undergraduates in the College of Engineering. Students must reapply for these scholarships each year they wish to be considered. Although some of the scholarships are awarded based on financial need, most of them are based on a combination of need and merit, or merit alone. Merit is generally described as having a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.

All of the scholarships in our College of Engineering endowments are part of the CoE need- and merit-based scholarship program and share a common application which you may submit electronically. Application deadlines are April 30, 2012 for the Spring/Summer 2012 terms, and June 1, 2012 for the Fall/Winter terms of the following academic year (i.e. June 1, 2012 for Fall/Winter 2012-13). Applications are reviewed by the College of Engineering Scholarship Committee and all applicants will be notified of the decision by e-mail.

Lucille B. Conger Alumnae Group Scholarship for Engineering Undergraduates

The application period for the Lucille B. Conger Scholarship for 2012-2013, is now open.

Founded in 1947, the Conger Organization currently has approximately 150 members. The group is actively involved in raising funds to provide scholarships to women in financial need to attend the University of Michigan. Application deadline is April 6, 2012 by 5:00 - no exceptions. Eligibility applies to women:

  • who are U.S. citizens and Michigan residents;
  • who are currently enrolled in degree-granting undergraduate programs at the University of Michigan;
  • with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5;
  • who qualify for need-based aid and have submitted a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA);
  • who demonstrate involvement in the University community; and
  • who enroll full-time during the 2012-2013 academic year;
  • who are not immediate family of Conger members;
  • who are seeking first undergraduate degree.

Fulbright Scholarships

Applicants must:

  • Be U.S. citizens at the time of application. Permanent residents are not eligible.
  • Hold a B.A. degree or the equivalent before the start of the grant.
    • Applicants who have not earned a B.A. degree or the equivalent, but who have extensive professional study and/or experience in fields in which they wish to pursue a project, may be considered.
    • In the creative and performing arts, four years of professional study and/or experience meets the basic eligibility requirement.
  • Be in good health. Grantees will be required to submit a satisfactory Medical Certificate of Health from a physician.
  • Have sufficient proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country to communicate with the people and to carry out the proposed study. This is especially important for projects in the social sciences and the humanities.

Goldwater Scholarships

The application period for the Goldwater scholarship is now closed for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The Goldwater Scholarship is for students in the sciences, mathematics, and engineering who will be juniors and seniors in the 2012-2013 academic year.  Eligible candidates are US citizens or permanent residents who are planning to apply for US citizenship.   Successful candidates have outstanding academic records, excellent recommendations, and some research or other hands-on experience in their fields.  Students can register on the Goldwater website and complete an application there.   UM can make four nominations each year and we average about three winners annually. HENAAC Scholars Program

Industry-Sponsored Scholarships

The following companies have all recently sponsored industrial scholarships through the College of Engineering: Air Products, Alcoa, Bechtel, Boeing, BP, Caterpillar, Chevron, Chrysler, Eli Lilly, Exxon Mobil, Ford, John Deere, Lockheed Martin, Medtronic, Qualcomm, Rockwell Collins, Union Pacific, United Technologies, and the UPS Foundation.

All industry-sponsored scholarships share a single online application and are awarded through the Engineering Scholarship Office. You must submit only ONE application to be considered for all available scholarships listed in the previous paragraph.All students that wish to apply for an industry-sponsored scholarship must meet the following requirements:

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or a permanent resident of the United States
  • You must be enrolled full-time in the College of Engineering during the fall and winter semesters of the academic year for which you are applying to the scholarship
  • You must declare your major prior to applying (For help with declaring, visit the Engineering Advising Center)
  • You must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
  • You will not be participating in a co-op during the time the scholarship is received.

There are two steps required to apply for industrial scholarship consideration:

  1. File the electronic application for the 2012-2013 academic year. By clicking "Submit" at the end of the application, you are agreeing to grant the College of Engineering permission to use and share the following information with external scholarship committee members and/or the organization funding the scholarship for awarding and renewal purposes: unofficial transcripts, resume, local and permanent addresses, and telephone numbers.
  2. Email the following two documents to the Engineering Scholarship Office at coe.scholarships@umich.edu before June 1, 2012.
  • A one-page personal statement reflecting your career interests and objectives. The statement may discuss your preparation for these career interests, including specific, relevant examples from past and future coursework, employment, internships, extracurricular activities, etc.
  • A complete resume, listing full and part-time employment since high school graduation, educational history, and extracurricular activities.

Monroe-Brown Internship Program

The Monroe-Brown Internship Program provides high quality internships with hourly wages, valuable networking opportunities and at least $6,000 in scholarship funding to all student participants. The program is open to incoming juniors, seniors and graduate students at Kalamazoo College, Western Michigan University, Michigan State University, University of Michigan and second-year students at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Students attending Michigan State University and University of Michigan must have attended high school in the greater Kalamazoo area.

Rhodes, Marshall, and Mitchell Scholarships

If you have an exceptional record of academic achievement and leadership and an interest in studying in England or Ireland after graduation, you may want to learn more about the Rhodes, Marshall, and Mitchell Scholarships. You don't have to wait until you are a junior or senior to begin thinking about these opportunities. In fact, it helps to plan ahead. To find out how to apply for the Rhodes, Marshall, or Mitchell scholarships, please go to the Provost's Council on Student Honors web page for more information.

In 2009, the Provost’s Council on Student Honors modified the Rhodes, Marshall, and Mitchell application process at U-M. Candidates are urged to take advantage of mentoring by the Provost’s Council on Student Honors by submitting preliminary application materials (draft essays and resumes) beginning the first week of April. Materials should be emailed to Assistant Vice Provost Gretchen Weir. Faculty members of the Provost’s Council on Student Honors will provide guidance during the summer, and applicants should use that time for communicating with recommenders and redrafting their essays.

The official institutional deadline for applying for the University’s endorsement is the last Monday in August. Essays, resumes, and recommendations (4 for the Marshall and Mitchell and 5–8 for the Rhodes) are due by email to Assistant Vice Provost Gretchen Weir by noon.
The strongest applicants will be invited to Interviews in the second week of September, and endorsements will be announced by the middle of the month.
Applicants who are endorsed by the University will prepare formal application packets in late September.or better and a record of participation in activities that demonstrate leadership and commitment.

The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation Defense Scholarship for Service Program (SMART)

This program is intended for U.S. citizens to support the education and recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. This program is used to recruit and to retain civilian scientists and engineers to work at DoD agencies and laboratories. Recipients are awarded full tuition, educational fees, and a stipend.

Students with Disabilities

Between the University of Michigan, the Services for Students with Disabilities Office, (SSWD), and other agencies and affiliates; disabled students have several options for financial assistance. In many cases, funding is available in the form of federal loans, assistance from agencies, and some scholarships through the University. In other cases, students may receive scholarships through SSWD, such as the Adam Miller Fund, the Saul & Shirley Lederer Fund, and the Ridley Fund. Vulcans Scholarship

The application period for the Vulcan's scholarship for 2011-2012, is now closed.

Vulcans, the University of Michigan Senior Engineering Honor Society, awards outstanding undergraduate Engineering students with the Vulcan Scholarship Award. This monetary scholarship, presented at the annual College of Engineering Scholarship Luncheon, recognizes students for their leadership activities within the College of Engineering and University of Michigan community, and for their future plans for involvement. Selection of recipients is based on overall scholarship, character, extra-curricular activities, and financial need.

The Wang Chu Chien-Wen Summer Research Fund

The application period for Spring/Summer 2012 is now closed.

This application is for International and domestic students, of Sophomore or Junior standing.  Domestic students must show financial need (as determined via the FAFSA application and U-M's Office of Financial Aid).  The recipients of the Wang Chu Chien-Wen Research award will have responsibility for selecting a professor, based upon each recipient's particular area of Engineering interest; to work with and to provide research supervision to the recipient during the research period (Spring/Summer 2012). Additionally, the recipients will be responsible for submitting a final report to the faculty advisor and the donor of the award, and making an oral presentation to their affiliated department and any others interested in the College of Engineering by the end of September 2012.
