Scholarships for Current Undergraduate Students

PLEASE NOTE: You must have at least one semester's worth of undergraduate credits at the University of Michigan to be considered a current student on this page. Graduate students are not eligible for scholarships on this page.

All continuing students in the College of Engineering should consult our Calendar of Scholarship Opportunities each semester to determine the deadlines for each of the scholarship applications included. Please note: Our Calendar of Scholarship Opportunities does not include many of the outside scholarships that might be found through free online scholarship searches like FastWeb (please see "Free Online Scholarship Searches" in our Links to Additional Resources section on your left).

BP Michigan Scholarship Application

The BP University of Michigan Scholarship Program benefits top engineering, science, and business students. Awards are merit based with the following considerations:

  • 3.0 GPA
  • Strong interest in an energy industry career particularly with BP
  • Full time enrollment at the University of Michigan

BP awards will be made to students from the various Engineering disciplines. 

BP will make additional awards to students involved in Engineering related groups on campus.  Please indicate any Engineering group affiliation that you may have in your personal statement, and if you are in a leadership position within the group.

To Apply:    Submit the following two documents via e-mail, (preferably PDF attachments); to the Engineeering Scholarship Office at coe.scholarships@umich.edu before August 17, 2009.

The application period is now closed for the 2009-2010 academic year. 

  • A one-page personal statement reflecting your career interests and objectives, as they relate to the energy field. The statement may discuss your preparation for these career interests, including specific, relevant examples from past and future coursework, employment, internships, extracurricular activities and the like.  Include any Engineering group affiliation, and leadership roles within the group, if applicable.     
  • A complete resume listing full- and part-time employment since high school graduation, educational history, and extracurricular activities.

Center for the Education of Women Scholarship Programs

Churchill Scholarships

This application is closed for the 2009/2010 academic year.

Churchill Scholarships provide funding for one year of graduate study at Churchill College, Cambridge, in mathematics, natural science or engineering. You must be nominated by the University of Michigan to apply for this scholarship. The UM deadline for applications for the Churchill Scholarship was October 19, 2009. You should take the GRE general test before the UM deadline. The GRE subject test is no longer required. Application forms are available on the Churchill website.

Completed applications and recommendations should be to the UM Churchill Committee, LSA Honors, 1330 Mason Hall. Students interested in applying for the Churchill should schedule an appointment with Dr. Elleanor Crown (ecrown@umich.edu) and/or Professor David Gerdes (gerdes@umich.edu). Most successful candidates have a GPA of at least 3.7, excellent GRE scores, recommendations from faculty who know them well, some background in research, and a well thought out plan for study at Cambridge. Class of 1931E Scholarship

Overview
Class of '31E Scholars are selected by the '31E Scholarship Committee. The Committee consists of Class of 1931E graduates, spouses and children, former Scholars, and University representatives.

  • Scholarships are awarded based on academic record. Criteria used by the Committee are grade point average, community service, school activities, and employment experience. Relatives and descendants of 1931E members will be given priority.
  • The number and amount of Scholarships awarded in a year depend upon the amount of interest generated by the endowment fund.
    • Awards are determined annually by the committee. In 2009, the award for in-state students was $11,000 and for out-of-state students $14,000.
    • Currently, the fund supports 21 Scholars.
  • Scholarships are awarded annually.
  • Since the Program's inception, over 89 students have received Scholarships.
  • Scholarships are awarded annually, and are renewable as long as the Scholar continues to be eligible.

Requirements for Initial Eligibility

  • Freshmen in the College of Engineering
    • Maximum of 25 credits earned at the University
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.5

Application and Selection Process

  1. Eligible students should complete the online application form, which can be found on this website. An email notification will also be sent to all eligible students in January of 2009.
  2. Please see the application form for complete requirements regarding initial eligibility and scholarship renewal.
  3. Students should submit their online application no later than midnight on Sunday, January 25, 2009.
  4. All applications are reviewed by the '31E Scholarship Committee, which then selects 15-25 candidates for interviewing.
  5. Selected candidates are interviewed by the Committee on campus (usually late March).
  6. Candidates will be notified over the summer of the Committee's final decision (usually June).

College of Engineering Need- and Merit-Based Scholarships

This application is now closed for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The College of Engineering has nearly 200 scholarships that have been endowed over the years through the generosity of our alumni, private donors, and friends. These scholarships are available only to currently enrolled undergraduates in the College of Engineering. Students must reapply for these scholarships each year they wish to be considered. Although some of the scholarships are awarded based on financial need, most of them are based on a combination of need and merit, or merit alone. Merit is generally described as having a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.

Application Process
All of the scholarships in our College of Engineering endowments are part of the CoE need- and merit-based scholarship program and share a common application which you may submit electronically. Application deadlines are April 30, 2009 for the Spring/Summer 2009 terms, and June 1, 2009 for the Fall/Winter terms of the following academic year (i.e. June 1, 2009 for Fall/Winter 2009-10). Applications are reviewed by the College of Engineering Scholarship Committee and all applicants will be notified of the decision by e-mail.

Lucille B. Conger Alumnae Group Scholarship for Engineering Undergraduates

Founded in 1947, the Conger Organization currently has approximately 150 members. The group is actively involved in raising funds to provide scholarships to women in financial need to attend the University of Michigan. Application deadline is April 3, 2009 by 5:00 - no exceptions. Eligibility applies to women:

  • who are U.S. citizens and Michigan residents;
  • who are currently enrolled in degree-granting undergraduate programs at the University of Michigan;
  • with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5;
  • who qualify for need-based aid and have submitted a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA);
  • who demonstrate involvement in the University community; and
  • who enroll full-time during the 2009-2010 academic year.

CSE Scholars Program

The CSE Scholars Program seeks to build a challenging and supportive diverse community of scholars among students who are majors in computer science and computer engineering. Under the guidance of the CSE Scholars Advisory Committee, existing student support programs such as tutoring, mentoring, and recruitment of new students will become service opportunities for the members. You will play an integral part in the further development of the CSE Scholars Program, and will help to shape the program for years to come. Visit the CSE Scholars web site for more details.

To apply to become a member of the CSE Scholars Program for the 2009-10 academic year, you must submit a full application packet as detailed on the announcement as well as submit the online application .   This application is now closed.

General Motors Vehicle-Based Engineering Scholarship Program

The General Motors Vehicle-Based Engineering Scholarship Program provides financial awards to outstanding undergraduate students who are enrolled as full-time students in an engineering program of interest to General Motors and a member of one of the following vehicle-based teams: Solar Car, Formula SAE, and Mini-Baja. A limited number of scholarships are awarded through this program. Deadline: April 13, 2009.   This application is now closed.

GOLDWATER SCHOLARSHIPS

Up to 300 students in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering who will be juniors and seniors in the 2010-2011 academic year will be selected for scholarships of up to $7500/year by the Barry M. Goldwater Foundation. Applicants must be nominated by their institutions. The deadline for application to the University of Michigan Science Scholarship Committee for the 2010 competition was November 16, 2009.

Applicants are evaluated on:

1) Demonstrated potential for and commitment to a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering
2) Outstanding academic performance
3) Strength of recommendations

Most successful candidates have a GPA of 3.7 or better and some research or practical experience in their fields.

Applications should include the Nominee Information Form, Nominee's Essay, a secondary school transcript, a current UM transcript (an unofficial transcript will suffice for the initial screening), and transcripts from any other colleges or universities you have attended. Three letters of recommendation should be accompanied by the Independent Evaluation of Nominee Forms, and sent directly to the address below. Forms can be obtained from the Goldwater web site. All materials should be sent to:

HENAAC Scholars Program

The Purpose of HENAAC is to carry out its mission by bringing together the Hispanic community, academia, corporations, all levels of government, K-12 students, college students, parents, as well as professional associations, to create a positive change in the Hispanic community by increasing its active participation in our technological future. HENAAC encourages all engineering, applied science, computer science and math students to apply this year. Here are the steps you should follow:

  1. For additional information & to download the 2009 application visit http://www.henaac.org/scholars/
  2. Submit your completed application, transcript, letters of recommendation, essay and resume in one envelope by the postmark date of 30 April 2009.
  3. You only need to submit one application and accompanying materials to be considered for all the sponsored scholarships.
  4. HENAAC will determine the various scholarships you quality for based on your submitted application.

All HENAAC scholarships will be presented and awarded at the 20th Annual HENAAC Conference in Long Beach, CA on 8-11 October 2009. HENAAC provides transportation support and complimentary registration for all scholarship recipients.

Industry-Sponsored Scholarships

This application is now closed for the 2009-2010 academic year.

The following companies have all recently sponsored industrial scholarships through the College of Engineering: Alcoa, Boeing, BP, Caterpillar, Chevron, DaimlerChrysler, Eli Lilly, Exxon Mobil,  John Deere, Lockheed Martin, Union Pacific, and the UPS Foundation.

All industry-sponsored scholarships share a single online application (with the exception of General Motors) and are awarded through the Engineering Scholarship Office. You must submit only ONE application to be considered for all available scholarships listed in the previous paragraph. All students that wish to apply for an industry-sponsored scholarship for the 2009-10 academic year must meet the following requirements.

  • You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States
  • You must be enrolled full-time in the College of Engineering for fall and winter 2009/2010 
  • You must declare your major before applying: http://www.engin.umich.edu/students/advising/afterfirstyear/index.html
  • You must have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA
  • You do not plan to take co-op in either the Fall 2009 or Winter 2010 terms

There are two steps required to apply for industrial scholarship consideration.

  1. To file the electronic application for the 2009-10 academic year, please click here : https://www.engin.umich.edu/students/scholarships/applications/industrial/ . By clicking on the "Submit" button at the end of the application, you are agreeing to grant the College of Engineering permission to use and share the following information with external scholarship committee members and/or the organization funding the scholarship for awarding and renewal purposes: unofficial copy of transcript, resume, local and permanent addresses, and telephone numbers.
  2. Submit the following two documents to the Engineering Scholarship Office by e-mailing  them to coe.scholarships@umich.edu before June 1, 2009.

Monroe-Brown Internship Program  

The Monroe-Brown Internship Program provides high quality internships with hourly wages, valuable networking opportunities and at least $6,000 in scholarship funding to all student participants. The program is open to incoming juniors, seniors and graduate students at Kalamazoo College, Western Michigan University, Michigan State University, University of Michigan and second-year students at Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Students attending Michigan State University and University of Michigan must have attended high school in the greater Kalamazoo area.

Private Scholarships

  • Private (Non-UM) Scholarships

Rhodes, Marshall, and Mitchell Scholarships

If you have an exceptional record of academic achievement and leadership and an interest in studying in England or Ireland after graduation, you may want to learn more about the Rhodes, Marshall, and Mitchell Scholarships. You don't have to wait until you are a junior or senior to begin thinking about these opportunities. In fact, it helps to plan ahead. To find out how to apply for the Rhodes, Marshall, or Mitchell scholarships, please go to the Provost's Council on Student Honors web page for more information.

In 2009, the Provost’s Council on Student Honors modified the Rhodes, Marshall, and Mitchell application process at U-M. Candidates are urged to take advantage of mentoring by the Provost’s Council on Student Honors by submitting preliminary application materials (draft essays and resumes) beginning the first week of April. Materials should be emailed to Assistant Vice Provost Gretchen Weir. Faculty members of the Provost’s Council on Student Honors will provide guidance during the summer, and applicants should use that time for communicating with recommenders and redrafting their essays.

The official institutional deadline for applying for the University’s endorsement is the last Monday in August. Essays, resumes, and recommendations (4 for the Marshall and Mitchell and 5–8 for the Rhodes) are due by email to Assistant Vice Provost Gretchen Weir by noon.
The strongest applicants will be invited to Interviews in the second week of September, and endorsements will be announced by the middle of the month.
Applicants who are endorsed by the University will prepare formal application packets in late September.or better and a record of participation in activities that demonstrate leadership and commitment.

 

The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation Defense Scholarship for Service Program (SMART)

This program is intended for U.S. citizens to support the education and recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. This program is used to recruit and to retain civilian scientists and engineers to work at DoD agencies and laboratories. Recipients are awarded full tuition, educational fees, and a stipend. For more information, visit http://www.asee.org/smart or email smart@asee.org.

Vulcans Scholarship

Vulcans, the University of Michigan Senior Engineering Honor Society, awards outstanding undergraduate Engineering students with the Vulcan Scholarship Award.  This monetary scholarship, presented at the annual College of Engineering Scholarship Luncheon, recognizes students for their leadership activities within the College of Engineering and University of Michigan community, and for their future plans for involvement.  Selection of recipients is based on overall scholarship, character, extra-curricular activities, and need.  The application is accessible at http://www.engin.umich.edu/students/scholarships/applications/vulcan.doc (MS WORD).  The application and essay must be submitted by September 18, 2009.

The Wang Chu Chien-Wen Research Fund

This application is for International students, of Sophomore or Junior standing. The recipient of the Wang Chu Chien-Wen Research award will have responsibility for selecting a professor, based upon the recipient's particular area of Engineering interest, to work with and to provide research supervision to the recipient during the internship period (Spring/Summer 2010). Additionally, the recipient will be responsible for submitting a final report to the donor of the internship and making an oral presentation to their affiliated department and any others interested in the College of Engineering by the end of August 2010. All online applications must be submitted by February 28th, 2010.

This application is closed for 2009.  The application for Spring/Summer 2010, will be available in January, 2010.
