Suggestions to Make Mentoring Work
- Be a good listener.
- Know how and when to make referrals.
- Don't attempt to handle situations for which you are not qualified.
- Don't make decisions for mentees; help them make their own decisions.
- Stress a positive attitude throughout the relationship.
- Care about mentees as people by showing empathy and respect.
- Encourage students to attend events and programs and to participate in co-curricular activities.
- Keep appointments and be available within reason.
- Follow up on commitments made to your mentees.
- Be tactful when speaking about faculty and staff (or the College) in front of your mentee.
- Be yourself and help mentees feel at ease.
- Encourage open honest dialogue.
- Don't betray confidentiality.
- Encourage students to talk with you about their problems, academic difficulties, and financial problems, especially if they are considering withdrawing.
