Roles and Responsibilities of a Mentor

  • Provide "reasonable" assistance to students.
  • Direct students to support services when appropriate.
  • Serve as a resource and referral person.
  • Serve as a role model, friend and confidante.
  • As a representative of the College, provide a positive and supportive environment.
  • Serve as a liaison between students and other areas of the University when necessary (administrative support areas, faculty, staff, etc.).
  • Keep the program coordinators abreast of any and all information pertinent to the success of the program and the mentee.
  • Help improve the self-esteem of mentees.
  • Enhance opportunities for students' academic success.
  • Give and receive feedback on perceptions of the mentoring relationship.
  • Evaluate their participation and effectiveness.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Mentee/Protégé

  • Maintain consistent and prompt contact with their mentor.
  • Ask for meetings and assistance. Seek out a mentor's guidance and counseling.
  • Mentees do not have to follow all of their mentor's advice, but they should listen and attempt to keep an open mind.
  • Be as open and honest as possible with their mentor, letting them know about problems.
  • Provide meaningful feedback to mentors regarding what does and does not work.
  • Respect their mentor's time and effort. Keep time commitments. Promptly respond to mentor's phone calls or emails.
  • Contact the program coordinator if the relationship becomes uncomfortable.
