Roles and Responsibilities of a Mentor
- Provide "reasonable" assistance to students.
- Direct students to support services when appropriate.
- Serve as a resource and referral person.
- Serve as a role model, friend and confidante.
- As a representative of the College, provide a positive and supportive environment.
- Serve as a liaison between students and other areas of the University when necessary (administrative support areas, faculty, staff, etc.).
- Keep the program coordinators abreast of any and all information pertinent to the success of the program and the mentee.
- Help improve the self-esteem of mentees.
- Enhance opportunities for students' academic success.
- Give and receive feedback on perceptions of the mentoring relationship.
- Evaluate their participation and effectiveness.
Roles and Responsibilities of a Mentee/Protégé
- Maintain consistent and prompt contact with their mentor.
- Ask for meetings and assistance. Seek out a mentor's guidance and counseling.
- Mentees do not have to follow all of their mentor's advice, but they should listen and attempt to keep an open mind.
- Be as open and honest as possible with their mentor, letting them know about problems.
- Provide meaningful feedback to mentors regarding what does and does not work.
- Respect their mentor's time and effort. Keep time commitments. Promptly respond to mentor's phone calls or emails.
- Contact the program coordinator if the relationship becomes uncomfortable.
