Starting a New Student Organization

So, you want to start a new student organization...it isn't as complicated as it may seem. If you want to utilize University resources like room rental, vehicle rental and common areas reservation -- as well as qualify for funding from University units -- then follow this registration guide.

Step 1:  Register on the Student Organization and Recognition (SOAR) website. Make sure your group meets the requirements. Groups must re-register each year. Visit Maize Pages to ensure the organization doesn't already exist on campus.

Step 2:  To be recognized by the College student government (and qualify for their funding), then you'll need to register your group with the University of Michigan Engineering Council (UMEC).  You can initiate this process online. First, it's a good idea to check out their bylaws and learn more about the requirements.

Registration with UMEC -- and access to College resources -- may require that your group have a faculty or staff advisor. If your group is going to be closely related to a particular department, then a member of that department is your best choice. Otherwise, try to find a faculty or staff member who is 1) interested in working with your group and 2) interested in the goals of your group.

By completing these two steps, your new student organization is one of 1,000 student groups on campus! A great way to get started is to meet with Jennifer Wegner, Office of Student Affairs, to develop plans for your organization.
