University of Michigan Orientation Schedule

Day 1 - ONSP

Engineering Orientation Schedule

Day 2

The Engineering Advising portion of orientation begins in the afternoon of your 2nd day of orientation. Here is the schedule:

  • 1:00 p.m.: Engineering Welcome. A faculty member will welcome you to the College of Engineering. You will learn about the Engineering degree requirements and basic college policies and procedures. You will also meet the Engineering academic advisors as well as the peer advisors who will help you navigate your first year at UM.

  • 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.: During this time, you will complete Three Segments of the Engineering Orientation process which are as follows:

    • Academic Advising: You will meet with an engineering advisor to discuss your goals and interests. The advisor will help you determine the courses you should be taking for your first term in the College of Engineering. You will also receive your placement exam results. The advisor will also answer any questions you may have about the registration process or campus life in general.
    • CAEN Workshop: CAEN provides the information technology, network resources, and software that many engineering students use for their courses here at Michigan. Your peer advisors will talk to you about the policies and procedures of CAEN and help you to understand the privileges that come along with using the network. You will also review a U-M Wolverine Access tutorial similar to the one available online before orientation.
    • North Campus Tour: Peer Advisors will lead you on a tour of the North Campus area and show you where some of your first year courses will be held, some of the labs, and other important campus locations such as the Engineering Career Resource Center and the North Campus Bookstore.

  • 6:45 p.m.: If you are a member of a Living/Learning Community, you will be able to meet with a representative from your program. They will provide information on special courses and course sections which are being held for you, and they will explain how to register for those courses.

  • 7:30 p.m.: Meet with your Academic Peer Advisor. You will meet your academic peer advisor in a computer classroom to begin the process of backpacking your Fall courses. The peer advisors are there to help you create the best possible schedule for your first term. Your academic advisor will have worked with you already to determine which courses you should take in the fall. Backpacking is not registration. Backpacking will only save courses so that you may easily return to it when your registration appointment comes up. It does not save you a seat in the class.

Day 3

  • 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.: Advising & Registration. The next morning, you will meet again with your academic advisor at the Engineering Advising Center. As you make a final selection of fall courses, your advisor and peer advisor are there to guide you in your choices. A Math Advisor will be available to meet and talk with you about selecting the most appropriate math course for your first term.

Congratulations and Welcome to Engineering!
