Goal Setting and Planning
In the natural mentoring process, two people who have grown to like and respect each other and who have usually come together by chance informally agree to a relationship in which the senior and more experienced individual provides advice and support and develops the talents and abilities of the other. Mentoring also occurs under different situations where the initial encounters and actions of the persons involved are purposeful and planned.
Planned mentoring is often more difficult and awkward in the beginning since the meeting is not by chance. Mentoring matches are made with the hope that the pair will develop a strong personal or professional bond that will nourish the relationship. Structured activities often provide the time and space needed for the relationship to develop.
Planned mentoring relationships need clearly focused goals and activities that meet the needs of both the mentor and student to help sustain the relationship. The following tools have been designed to assist mentors and students in clarifying expectations, setting goals and creating appropriate accompanying action.
Exploring Expectations And Goals
After the initial meeting the mentor and mentee are encouraged to discuss issues related to the expectations and goals of the relationship.
