For Mentees

Michigan Engineering Alumni have volunteered to serve as mentors through the Just ASK (Alumni Sharing Knowledge) program. Mentors will be prepared to discuss topics in the following areas:

Academics:
  • Improve your study skills, habits, time and stress management
  • Learn how to approach faculty and staff about course work, letters of recommendation, etc.
  • Discuss your mentor's experiences of attending graduate school
  • Ask for guidance in selecting the proper courses, choosing a research advisor, deciding on research/internship opportunities, or funding
Career preparation:
  • Receive advice on career options
  • Learn what it's like in the "real world"
  • Shadow your mentor for a day
  • Receive help in preparing cover letters, resumes, and interviews
  • Get advice on choosing companies and finding resources in your field
  • Relocation information
Personal guidance:
  • Learn effective problem-solving skills
  • Identify your strengths and weaknesses
  • Get help with goal-setting
  • Talk without fear of retribution
  • Find a positive role model who has gone through similar experiences

FIND A MENTOR

Once you fill out the online request form, you will be matched to a mentor. We will send you the preferred contact information for your mentor. It will be your responsibility to initiate contact. Check-out the mentoring resources page for many great tips.

GUIDELINES

DO
  • Show sincere interest in developing a professional relationship.
  • Commit to having regular contact with your mentor.
  • Commit to carry-out agreed upon goals and action plans.
  • Share your biography.
  • Be clear and specific about your respective needs.
  • Be open and honest about your feelings.
  • Respect alternative points of view.
  • Listen and learn.
  • Ask questions.
  • Be prepared.
DON'T
  • Expect your mentor to find a job for you.
  • Cancel an appointment without notice.
