The following fellowships have been identified as being relevant for CoE graduate students. We'd like to thank the faculty and staff in the various CoE departments who provided us with the information to complete this list. The fellowships are sorted by type and application deadline (please note that the deadlines may change from year-to-year, so be sure to double-check these dates on the fellowship websites well in advance if you plan to apply). UM Fellowships
The Martin Luther King, Jr./Cesar Chavez/Rosa Parks Fellowship For underrepresented minorities in a master's or doctoral program, who are Michigan residents, and plan to teach in post secondary education.- Awards: vary by financial need--up to $20,000 for masters and $35,000 for PhD

The Rackham Emergency Fund is intended to provide Rackham graduate students who find themselves in emergency situations with financial assistance.

The Rackham Graduate Student Research Grants are intended to provide Rackham graduate students with financial assistance in carrying out research that will lead to advances toward their degree.

Provide opportunities for Rackham graduate students to become familiar with, and take part in the life of their academic professions. Awards are available only to Rackham students who have responded to a formal call for abstracts and whose abstract has been accepted for either poster or paper presentation at a conference.

Department of Defense Presidential Management Fellows
The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program was established by Presidential Executive Order in 1977. It is designed to attract to the Federal service outstanding individuals from a wide variety of academic disciplines who have an interest in, and a commitment to, a career in the analysis and management of public policies and programs. The program draws graduate students from a variety of academic, social, and cultural backgrounds to help meet the future challenges of public service. PMFs are hired for two-year internships. Initial salaries are determined based on experience and education. After successfully completing the two-year program, PMFs may be eligible for conversion to a permanent Government position and further promotional opportunities.

The U.S. Student Program is designed to give recent B.S./B.A. graduates, master's and doctoral candidates, and young professionals and artists opportunities for personal development and international experience. Nonproliferation Graduate Program (NGP)
Administered by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, WA, the 12 to 14 month, full-time fellow program provides participants with specialized training and practical experience on projects and initiatives that contribute to a safer world. In addition to gaining valuable experience working with federal government programs, participants have opportunities to collaborate with the U.S. Department of Energy, other government agencies, national laboratories, and non-governmental organizations.

Sandia National Laboratories, President Harry S. Truman Fellowship in National Security Science and Engineering
The Fellowship provides the opportunity for recipients to pursue independent research of their own choosing that supports the national security mission of Sandia National Laboratories. The appointee is expected to foster creativity and to stimulate exploration of forefront science and technology and high-risk, potentially high-value R&D. Truman Fellowship candidates are expected to have solved a major scientific or engineering problem in their thesis work or will have provided a new approach or insight to a major problem, as evidenced by a recognized impact in their field.

Rickover Graduate Fellowship Program in Naval Engineering
This program is designed to meet the needs of the Naval Reactors Division of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for appropriately trained personnel for the maintenance and development of science and engineering technology as it pertains to naval nuclear propulsion. The program will assist in preparing students for roles in the naval nuclear propulsion and will support the broader objective of advancing fission energy development through the research efforts of the fellows. The technical areas with greatest interest include reactor physics, nuclear materials science and engineering, shielding technology, and two-phase flow.

Fannie and John Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowships in the Applied Physical Sciences

Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF) Fellowships for Study or Research in Belgium
The Belgian American Educational Foundation (BAEF) encourages applications for fellowships for advanced study or research at a Belgian university or institution of higher learning. The fellowship period must be at least 6 months. In addition to the stipend, the Foundation will provide health insurance. Applicants must be citizens of the United States and either have a Masters degree or equivalent degree, or be working towards a Ph.D. or equivalent degree. Preference is given to applicants under the age of 30 with a reading and speaking knowledge of Dutch, French, or German. BAEF Fellows must reside in Belgium during the tenure of their fellowship.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation annually awards ten German Chancellor Fellowships to young professionals in the private, public, not-for-profit, cultural and academic sectors who are citizens of the United States. The German Chancellor Fellowship provides for a stay of one year in Germany for professional development, study, or research. Applicants design individual projects and decide at which institutions or organizations to pursue them. The program, which also includes fellowships for citizens of the Russian Federation and the People's Republic of China, sponsors individuals who demonstrate the potential to strengthen ties between Germany and their own country through their profession or studies. Prior knowledge of German is not a prerequisite. Applicants must have completed their B.A. following September 1, 1998.

The purpose of The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is to provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. The Program was established in recognition of the contributions New Americans have made to American life and in gratitude for the opportunities the United States has afforded the donors and their family.

The Luce Scholars Program provides stipends and internships for fifteen young Americans to live and work in Asia each year. Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation Defense Scholarship for Service Program (SMART) This program is intended for U.S. citizens to support the education and recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
