Minors

The College of Engineering is currently developing two minors and a certificate to be available to engineering undergraduates in 2008.

International Minor

Undergraduate engineering students will soon be able to do an international minor that combines technical expertise with international understanding. The minor can be satisfied with approximately 17-20 credits that includes foreign language proficiency, understanding of non-U.S. cultures, interculture communication skills, and global trends in engineering and business. A practical international experience will be required.

Status: Approved by the College of Engineering faculty and will go into effect Fall Term 2008. This is the first minor available within the College of Engineering.

Multidisciplinary Minor

This minor will allow undergraduate engineering students to obtain practical hands-on experience designing, building, and testing technology systems in collaboration with students from other disciplines both inside and outside of engineering. The minor can be satisfied with 15 credits of coursework associated with specialized multidisciplinary team projects and including competitive teams such as Solar Car, Steel Bridge, and Human-Powered Submarines.

Status: Approved by the College of Engineering faculty, and will go into effect Fall Term 2008.

Entrepreneurship Certificate (proposed)

Undergraduate and masters engineering students will be able to study business methods associated with writing business plans, obtaining venture capital and other funding, intellectual property, etc. The proposed certificate will require a minimum of 9 credits of business related courses and seminars.

Status: Still to be voted on by the College of Engineering Curriculum Committee and Faculty. Earliest possible start date is Fall Term 2008. However, engineering students may enroll in Engineering 490 seminars (three 1 credit seminars) Winter Term 2008.
