Supplemental Instruction
(ELRC)
Fall 2007 Supplemental Instruction (SI) Schedule
Sponsored by: College of Engineering, 3M Foundation, Alcoa, & Caterpillar, Inc.
The Engineering Learning Resource Center (ELRC) offers Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions for a number of first and second year courses.
The SI sessions for Math 115, 116, and 215 are primarily focused on exam preparation. Students will work on past exam problems, first individually in timed settings, and then collaboratively in small groups. Students will be encouraged to explain their solutions to their peers and critique others' solutions. Through this format, students can benefit by
- making the jump from memorization of facts to fundamental understanding
- hearing other perspectives, and
- gaining practice in writing solutions to past math exam problems.
The SI sessions for other courses are structured to provide
- Additional instruction and reinforcement of prerequisite skills for the course
- Reinforcement of course concepts and additional practice in solving problems
- Making the jump from memorization to fundamental understanding
- Mutual interaction and support (group problem-solving, sharing "best practices," hearing other perspectives, etc.)
