About Us
The Michigan Solar Car Team is a non-profit, student run organization whose purpose is to design, finance, build and race a solar powered vehicle in several competitions across the US and the World. We are a society dedicated to the development of our members as teammates, scholars, competitors, teachers, and leaders. With a mission for education, we work with respect and responsibility as a team that is inwardly collaborative and outwardly competitive. With a regard for a diverse people, values, and talents, we strive to create a consistent, comprehensive, and cohesive organization. Members of our team come from across all academic disciplines and experience levels. With a core group of approximately 30 students and a supporting group of another 100 team members, the Michigan Solar Car Team works year round to develop a new vehicle on a two year project cycle. With over a decade of tradition, the Michigan Solar Car Team has been one of the most exciting and involved student projects to take place at the University of Michigan.

Races

The first race is the American Solar Challenge 2001, a 2,300 mile cross-country adventure that traces historic Route 66 from the starting line in downtown Chicago all the way to the finish in Palm Springs, CA. The second is the World Solar Challenge which begins along the northern shores of Australia in Darwin and races through the heart of the Outback to the southern shores of Adelaide. Both of these races are international competitions open to any corporate, collegiate, or private teams and they attract some of the brightest student minds in the world.

History

Our team has a had a long and successful history in solar car racing built on the great traditions of our previous vehicles-Sunrunner, Maize & Blue, Solar Vision, Wolverine, and MaizeBlaze. In the past decade of racing, our team has won two of the five previous national championships and we've competed in Australia three times, finishing as high as third place overall.

Team

With the ultimate goal of educating the public about the potential of alternative energy resources and advanced technologies, our team has embraced the friendly competition of the races and we always look forward to challenging ourselves to develop the best team and vehicle in the world. Members of our team come from a variety of academic disciplines including engineering, business administration, and liberal arts, and while working on the project, we are exposed to nearly every aspect of a real world company. In many ways, we consider the project to be a "student corporation" as opposed to a student group. Although members join for different reasons, in the end, their participation is a personally rewarding experience that reflects the student's genuine desire to learn as much as possible while making the project as successful as possible.

Sponsors

In order to maintain a competitive edge, our team not only has to rely on the hard work, creativity, and professionalism of our members, but we must also rely on the generosity of corporate sponsors, without whom our team would not exist. Our sponsors provide the team with the necessary material and financial capital necessary to remain at the forefront of technology.
