About SGE

Updated on Sept. 16, 2009 by Jay Novak (novakjs at umich dot edu)

The Goals of SGE
The primary goal of SGE is to develop professional leaders in the engineering and business communities to be culturally prepared for the global business environment.  To promote such development, SGE sponsors lectures, social events, and career development activities that are designed to bring together diverse and underrepresented students in an atmosphere conductive to cross-cultural discovery.

The Values of SGE
The values that SGE upholds – global experiences, diversity, and strong academic work – directly relate to the values stated on the United Technologies Corporation's website: “We actively embrace diversity within the company – both in the workforce and in the way we approach problems.  We believe that a rich mixture of cultures within the company enriches us all”.  SGE believes that the mixture of cultures and diversity in the student organization enhances the opportunity for growth and innovative ideas.

Accomplishments
In the past, SGE has held spotlight events informing its members and the college community of the engineering and business job opportunities in various countries including Germany, China, Japan, Italy, etc.  Each lecture featured University of Michigan students who have lived, studied, and/or worked in their specific country of interest.  The presenters shared their general impressions, cultural anecdotes, and engineering/business knowledge.  Each lecture series also featured authentic refreshments particular to the country of topic, questions and answers, and cultural trivia games.  These cultural sessions have been enormously successful in the past, attracting a wide range of engineering and business students, as well as U of M faculty.
