Mentorship

Quarterdeck Honor Society
Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering
University of Michigan
Mentorship Program

Purpose

The purpose of the mentorship program is to assist sophomore, transfer, and all other newly declared students in having an easier transition into the department and become more acclimated with their fellow students, faculty, and staff.

 Outline

When a student declares into the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering department, he or she has the option to enroll in the mentorship program.  Each mentee will be assigned to one mentor.  They will be required to fill out the Mentorship Placement Form, so they can be more accurately paired up.  The program is completely voluntary and the student can end participation at any time.

Being a mentor is also voluntary.  Each mentor is allowed to have no more than two (2) mentees.  Mentors are given suggested activities and subjects to participate in and discuss with their mentee.  The main goal of the Mentorship Program is to make the mentees feel welcome and comfortable in the department.  It is the job of the mentor to be an information source for the student.  It is also recommended that the mentor tell the student about upcoming activities in the department.  The mentee should feel comfortable asking their mentor questions about classes and other school related topics.

Mentors are required to fill out a brief Mentorship Application Form to help in matching new students with their mentors.  Mentors who are members of the Quarterdeck Honor Society will receive one (1) service point per hour of volunteer work.
