CONSTITUTION OF THE GRADUATE ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING NETWORK OF
PROFESSIONALS, EDUCATORS AND STUDENTS
Article I - Name
The official name of the organization will
be the Graduate Environmental Engineering
Network of Professionals, Educators and Students
(GrEENPEAS) at the University of Michigan.
Article II - Purpose
- To promote professional relationships
and networking among graduate students, staff,
faculty
and alumni of the EWRE Program
- To promote and stimulate academic
exchange among members of the community sharing
an
interest in the field of environmental
engineering and science
- To provide opportunities for members
to serve the EWRE Program, CEE Department,
College
of Engineering, University,
and Community
- To provide a voice to advocate for
the individual and collective needs of graduate
students
within the CEE department.
Article III - Membership
Section 1: Membership and participation shall be free
from discrimination based on race, religion,
ethnic background, national origin, handicap,
gender or sexual orientation.
Section 2: Membership shall be open to all graduate
students, staff, faculty and alumni of the
Program in Environmental and Water Resources
Engineering (EWRE) in the Department of Civil
and Environmental Engineering (CEE) or members
of the University community sharing an interest
in the field of environmental engineering
and science.
Section 3: All members must have record of their chapter
membership on file and are required to pay
annual membership fees as specified in the
bylaws.
Article IV - Officers and Advisor(s)
Section 1: The offices of President, Vice-President,
Secretary, and Treasurer shall be members
of the Executive Board.
Section 2: The term of office is one year from the
first of February.
Section 3: The Executive Board members shall be elected
in a plurality vote by the membership and
elections shall be held in January of each year.
Section 4: At least one faculty advisor is required
at all times. New faculty advisors
shall be selected by majority vote by the
Executive Board and shall be reviewed annually.
Section 5: The offices of President and Vice-President
are required to be filled by student members.
Article V - Officers and Duties
Section 1: The duties of the President include:
- formulating a yearly agenda for the
organization, such as a list of planned activities
and
events. Goals and priorities
will be determined.
- ensuring that all activities fall
within the organizational goals as stated
in the Constitution.
- presiding over all regular and special
meetings of the organization.
- ensuring that all activities and
other organizational functions are properly
managed under
the guidelines of the constitution
and bylaws, and the policies of the University
of
Michigan.
- creating permanent or temporary positions
to assist in performing the duties of the
office.
- creating committees as needed.
- advising Executive Committee in a
past-President role on an as needed basis.
Section 2: The duties of the Vice-President include:
- assisting the President in ensuring
that the objectives are met.
- assuming the duties of President
in his/her absence or vacancy in the office
of president.
- acting as a liaison between the Executive
Board and all regular, special, and temporary
committees.
Section 3: The duties of the Secretary include:
- maintaining written correspondence
with on-campus and off-campus organizations
affiliated with GrEENPEAS.
- recording events and activities performed
by the organization.
- preparing an annual report to inform
the Department (CEE) and members on past
accomplishments and future
planned activities.
- keeping minutes during Executive,
general, and committee meetings, and to document
a
record of the minutes for the
student chapter.
- maintaining records of the references
belonging to the organization.
- maintaining a record of membership,
updated annually.
Section 4: The duties of the Treasurer include:
- compiling and presenting a financial
report of the previous year.
- setting up a budget for the upcoming
year.
- overseeing fund raising activities
and collecting dues.
- keeping records of the student chapter
funds and making expenditures in a legal
manner, in
accordance with the Student
Organization Account Service (SOAS).
Section 5: The duties of the Faculty Advisor include:
- providing support and guidance for
the Executive Board and membership administering
annual elections
Article VI - Amendments
Section 1: All amendments are to be submitted in writing
to the President and Secretary, then read
at a meeting. The amendment can be voted
on in the same meeting.
Section 2: Amendments shall be made by a two-thirds
majority vote by the members present provided
that half the membership is present.
Bylaws
Section 1: Election of Officers
- Elections shall be administrated
by the Faculty Advisor.
- Nominations shall be accepted during
a scheduled meeting or via e-mail prior to
that
meeting.
- Elections shall be conducted by e-mail
ballots.
- A vacancy of the Presidency shall
be filled by the Vice-President. The
office of Vice
President shall then be filled
by a majority election of the Executive Board.
Section 2: Membership Fees
- Dues for a one-year membership beginning
in September may be collected as deemed
necessary by the Executive
Board.
Section 3: Meetings
- Regular meetings will be held at
least two times per semester during the academic
year.
Section 4: Committees
- The following standing committees
will be maintained:
- Social - to organize social activities
- Seminar - to assist Faculty in organizing
EWRE seminar series
- Service - to organize service activities
Section 5: CEE Student Advisory Board
- GrEENPEAS will provide two (2) representatives
to the CEE Student Advisory Board.
These
representatives will be appointed
by the executive board.
Section 6: Amendments
- Bylaws can be amended by a simple
majority vote by the members present provided
that half
the membership is present.
This constitution was adopted on 20 May 1999
by the GrEENPEAS membership.
