The University of Michigan Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering is pleased to announce the 2003 Walter J. Weber Jr. Distinguished Lecture in Environmental Sciences and Engineering. This annual lecture series brings one of the world's foremost experts in environmental engineering and science to campus each year to share the results of their work and their vision for the future. We hope you will be able to join us.

This seminar is made possible through the generous support of Professor Walter J. Weber, Jr., Ph.D., P.E., D.E.E. ABSTRACT

Environmental problems are many indeed. But which problems are the most important, the most intractable, and will require the greatest ingenuity to solve? Where can we contribute as environmental engineers, scientists, and policy experts? This lecture will reflect on seven Environmental Grand Challenges for the 21st century as judged from the standpoint of sustainability.

We will discuss the following environmental challenges and what technological or societal/cultural advances are necessary to make progress over the next few decades.

• Water, our most precious resource
• Emerging Chemical Contaminants
• Global Climate Change and Energy Choices
• Biodiversity and loss of species
• Genetically Modified Organisms and the Biological Revolution
• Global Poverty
• Sustainability and the Future
