| BSURE's three major objectives are centered around recruitment, support and exposure. Our current programs are designed to address each of these areas. Recruitment BSURE remains actively involved in the recruitment of qualified undergraduate minorities into the departmental community as well as the College of Engineering itself. With the BME Department's total support we are able to interact and network with prospective students on a very personal level in an enjoyable environment. BSURE is also involved in undergraduate outreach programs which will inform undergrads and encourage them to pursue graduate degrees in BME. We are also the creators and administrators of the "What's Inside of Me?" program which is the BME component of the DAPCEP (Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program). This programs plants a seed about BME that might never otherwise be planted. It is the organization's primary service project. Support Support for graduate students as well as undergraduates is essential to retaining good students. The transition into a big university like the U of M is often a tough one and should not be traversed alone. Mentoring programs have been implemented to help ease the transition. Since most members of BSURE are also members of SMES-G (Society of Minority Engineering Students - Graduate Component), we have many avenues and networking opportunities to explore to try to get any student as much help as he or she needs. Exposure Since the U of M is well represented in industry, there is no better way to expose current BME students of possible career opportunities than to have its own graduates return and talk about their experiences in industry and/or academia. Seeing others who went through the same program and are now prospering will hopefully provide motivation and encouragement to those who attend. |
