About SMES

The Society of Minority Engineering Students focuses on the recruitment, retention, and successful graduation of its members. Our organization acts as a vehicle to promote unity through programs that encourage academic excellence, personal growth, and professional development.

SMES is an umbrella society for nine underrepresented minority organizations within the University of Michigan's College of Engineering. Within this role we work to coordinate extensive colaboration between these societies to provide for maximized benefit accross the college.

The organizations we serve are the following:

  • AISES - (American Indian Science and Engineering Society)
  • AMES - (Aerospace Minority Engineering Society)
  • BEECS - (Black Electrical Engineers & Computer Scientists)
  • NOBCChE - (National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers)
  • NSBE - (National Society of Black Engineers)
  • SHPE - (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers)
  • SMES-G - (Society of Minority Engineering Students-Graduate)
  • UMME - (Unified Minority Mechanical Engineers)
  • VIBES - (Vibrant Industrial Black Engineering Students)
