2003 Captain: Cordelle Thomasma
In 2004, the U-M steel bridge team had a lot of pressure to succeed, coming after the 2003 National Championship team. The year began with design meetings. This year, we attempted to split up into smaller teams of 4-5 people, with each team coming up with an independant design for the bridge. After discussing each teams ideas, we chose to proceed with a truss over the long span, and a simple beam over the short span. This design hoped to meet the goals of 0.25" total deflection and 80 pounds, which were much more strict than last year. We then proceeded to do intensive analyses using RISA 3D. Much effort was put into optimizing sections in order to have a light bridge, all the while maintaining stiffness. We then moved to the fabrication process in the Wilson Student Project Center. After a couple of months of fabrication, we prepared for the regional competion by practicing our construction run. The maximum number of builders allowed this year was 6, but we quickly found we could get by with only 5. Like last year, our construction run at regionals was less than perfect, but we still managed to take first place, and earn a trip to the national competition. At National's, we showed up with an even smaller construction team, being the only team to run with four builders. After a flawless run, except for a questionable penalty, we had a desireable economy score. The bridge was then loaded, and as planned she held up quite nicely. We were then weighed, coming in 1.5 pounds heavier than at regionals. After all was said and done, U-M came out with a 2nd place overall, receiving honors in lightness, stiffness, and efficiency.
