AWIM

A World In Motion makes the challenges of math and science exciting by bringing authentic engineering design experiences into the classroom.  Through highly interactive learning experiences students learn the laws of physics, motion, flight, and electronics.
AWIM is one of the many examples of SAE involvement in all levels of education - from elementary school to postgraduate to professional development. The program represents an opportunity to make learning fun, have young students discover the exciting application of science principles and share information about rewarding careers in engineering and technical professions. We welcome your involvement in this effort to influence and enhance the ways in which our youth are prepared to meet the future. By participating in the AWIM program, you are helping to prepare students for the challenges of tomorrow through personal discovery. As the volunteer who provides information about exciting, science-related careers - you are playing an important role in the development of our future workforce.

The curriculum presents the Engineering Design Experience in a manner that aligns with the engineering practices of the real world.  The design process that students undertake includes the following five phases:  Set Goals, Build Knowledge, Design, Build & Test, and Present.

SAE has collected many testimonials specifically stating that the A World In Motion program was a contributing factor to their decision to pursue science and engineering studies in college. SAE recently received a 5-Year grant for an outside firm to track and collect data on the performance and career decisions of students who participate in the A World In Motion program.  This is the first year (school year 2004-2005) of the study.

Each week, volunteers spend about 60 minutes in a classroom over the 6-8 week period or alternatively teachers may choose to have 2 sessions a week for a duration of 60 minutes for 3 weeks.  In addition to committing to class time, there is also preparation time and commuting time to the school, transportation is provided by the university so all you have to do is devote 1 and ½ hours of your time twice or even once a week. All new volunteers are required to attend a training workshop for 1 hour.

In a recent survey, volunteers devoted between 9-24 hours during the school year to the AWIM program.  The majority of new volunteers commit 20-22 hours during the school year.

Please know that it is common for a volunteer to miss one or two of the six classroom sessions.  This is not a problem because the teacher is trained in the program, and four volunteers are assigned per classroom.  In the event you cannot attend the classroom session, please inform your class leader or you building representative.  If necessary, try to schedule a substitute volunteer to attend. Furthermore you will need to make a personal decision if AWIM fits into your schedule.
