Abstract: This work is being undertaken to aid individuals with severe physical handicaps, mainly people in wheelchairs, by designing and prototyping a user friendly, safe, and moderately sized computer desk. Expectations for the desk are that the redesigned desk will serve the purpose of a typical computer desk, but will have a centered focus on our user's needs, to make their physical obstacles seem less strenuous while using a computer at their desk. We expect the desk to be vertically adjustable to fit individuals in wheelchairs of different heights. We also expect that people without physical challenges will be able to use this desk easily and find it suitable for their needs in any home or office setting. User safety will be a secondary focus for the project, that the user will not be harmed if they were to accidentially mover their wheel chair into the desk.
