The International Professional Honor Society for

Materials Science and Engineering

Alpha Sigma Mu is the honorary metallurgical and materials engineering society designed to recognize outstanding students in these programs who attain high rank in scholarship and who possess to a high degree the qualities of exemplarary integrity, leadership, and initiative.

By this recognition and by establishing high standards for ethical conduct and emphasizing the obligation each of these students has to contribute to the well being of his fellowman, this society promotes the overall best interest of this profession.

David Martin Message from the Chapter Faculty Advisor

The Gamma Chapter of Alpha Sigma Mu, the International Honor Society in Materials Science and Engineering, has been active ever since its inception.  My own initiation was as a University of Michigan Undergraduate in 1982, and we had a reception in the basement of Prof. Larry Van Vlack's home on the southwest side of Ann Arbor.  I can still recall Prof. Van Vlack and his wife as kind, gentle and caring about students, and was impressed that he would take the time to have a group of us over to his own home for the celebration.

The University of Michigan has continued to be active in Alpha Sigma Mu, with representatives serving on the Board of Trustees.  Michigan has been home to the national Alpha Sigma Mu web site for the past several years, although the University of Dayton has recently agreed to take over this responsibility.  At Michigan the Alpha Sigma Mu chapter has had a long tradition of service to fellow students by providing free tutoring, particularly for students taking MSE 250 and now 220, two introductory courses to inspire undergraduates in the field of materials science.  Over the years they have also sponsored other events on occasion, including egg drop contests, career fairs, and luncheons.  Alpha Sigma Mu members have also helped in service to other department organizations such as the Michigan Materials Society.

Steve CoryellMessage from the President

As president of the Michigan Gamma chapter of Alpha Sigma Mu for the 2007-2008 school year, I am honored to represent a society of such distinguished individuals.  This is an exciting year for our chapter, as we were able to bring in twenty new members, more than double that of the previous few years.  Our new members represent the heart of the Materials Science department who have all demonstrated continued success and leadership in their undergraduate or graduate careers.

This year, my first goal is to gain recognition of Alpha Sigma Mu around the engineering campus and community.  I am continually seeking more ways to increase Alpha Sigma Mu involvement academically, professionally, and socially.  Suggestions and new ideas are always welcome and encouraged.  I plan on offering tutoring sessions for several classes where help has been limited in the past, such as thermodynamics, quantum physics, and introductory labs.  We will work jointly with the Michigan Materials Society to plan more volunteer actities and recruitment activities, such as a freshmen outreach ice cream social and tour, where an exciting overview of MSE will be presented.  A new mentoring program is already being set in motion for newly declared Materials Science majors interested in discussing classes and professors with successful upperclassmen members of Alpha Sigma Mu.

As members of Alpha Sigma Mu, or interested scholars, I welcome you to the newly refurbished chapter website.  As this sight is still under construction, this will become the new home for Alpha Sigma Mu involvement. Interactive templates are being constructed for live online sign-ups for tutoring, volunteer service opportunities around campus, and materials science related events.  My hope is that students will now know where they may always seek help or information on events 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, without having to know who to contact.
