Dr. Vladimir Chvykov has a PhD from the Lebedev Physics Institute of USSR's Academy of Sciences (1991). Before joining the University of Michigan he was a Senior Scientist at the General Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, where his research in the areas of laser-mater interactions and development of multi-pass amplifiers resulted in numerous scientific articles in the referred journals, as well as multiple patents. His current projects at the University of Michigan include the high-power short-pulse laser development, which encompasses multi-pass laser amplifier, short-pulse contrast enhancement and pulse characterization. He is one of the main developers of the HERCULES laser – currently the highest intensity laser in the world. Several innovations suggested by him, such as contrast cleaner, which allowed to reach a record contrast of 10^11, and EDP method, which significantly increased extracted energy from the booster amplifiers, have already spread out to several other laboratories (COHERENT - USA, LOA, LIRM - France, ELI - European project ExaWatt laser).
