Research area keywords: Laser-matter interaction at relativistic intensities, laser ion and electron acceleration, nonlinear QED.
Dr. Stepan Bulanov has a PhD from Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (Moscow, Russia), where he studied nonlinear Quantum Electrodynamic (QED) -processes which take place in ultra-strong electromagnetic fields in vacuum and plasma as well as generation of ultra-short electromagnetic pulses in the wakefield interaction with different nonlinear structures in plasma. He came to the University of Michigan in 2005 to use the opportunity to study theoretically and in computer simulations the ultra intense laser - matter interactions. He is investigating the proton acceleration from relativistically strong laser pulse interactions with solid targets and its applications for radiation therapy. He is also collaborating in the development of a new line of investigation into radiation back reaction in ultra-intense fields that include nonlinear QED effects.
