Controller Scheduling Based on Neural Network Estimates
of Stability Regions and Performance
-
Abstract
-
A new approach to switching control using neural networks
will be presented. Given a set of candidate controllers, a
pair of neural networks is trained to identify the stability
region and estimate the closed-loop performance for each
controller. The neural network outputs are used in the
on-line switching rule to select the controller output to be
applied to the system during each control period.
Sufficient conditions for stability of the closed-loop
system will be presented along with experimental results
from the real-time control of a submerged vessel using the
neural network-based switching strategy.

Bruce H. Krogh
received the B.S. degree in mathematics and physics from
Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL, in 1975, and the MS and Ph.D. degrees in
electrical engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana, in 1978
and 1983. From 1980 to 1981 he was a Systems Engineer with Westinghouse
Corporation, developing algorithms and control software for energy
control
centers. Since 1983 he has been with Carnegie Mellon University,
Pittsburgh, PA, where he is currently Professor of Electrical
and Computer Engineering.
His current research interests include distributed computer
control systems for industrial automation, real-time control of
semiconductor processes, discrete event systems, Petri nets,
and real-time
software engineering.
Dr. Krogh received the Presidential Young Investigator Award from the
National Science Foundation in 1985,
and the Excellence in Teaching Award
from the Carnegie Mellon Chapter of Eta Kappa Nu in 1988. In 1990 he
received the Senior U.S. Scientist Award from the Alexander von Humboldt
Foundation to support a one-year visiting research appointment with the
Process Control Group, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of
Dortmund, Germany. From 1992-1996
Dr. Krogh was Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE
Transactions on Control Systems Technology. He is a Senior Member
of the IEEE and serves on the Board of Governors of the IEEE Control
Systems Society.
