Formation Flight
Instrumentation System
University of California
– Los Angeles
A
joint project between NASA Dryden, Boeing, and UCLA is described. The objective is to fly aircraft in a
special formation to reduce drag.
UCLA's development of a highly accurate, reliable instrumentation system
to measure relative position, velocity, and attitude is presented in terms of
the instruments, computer architecture, and estimation algorithms. A project goal is to use carrier phase
differential GPS measurements fused with inertial measurements to produce
relative position estimates with RMS errors of a few centermeters.
