Richard Chylla

Associate Director, Licensing
Director, Engineering Tech Transfer

Rich Chylla is the Associate Director of Licensing and Director of Engineering Tech Transfer. His responsibilities include the management of intellectual property, the marketing of technology disclosures, and the negotiation of licensing contracts.

Prior to coming to the University of Michigan in 2008, Rich had over twenty years of international experience in the specialty chemical industry at Johnson Polymer and BASF Corporation in research and development, business development, technology management and licensing.

Rich holds BS and Ph.D degrees in Chemical Engineering, both from the Illinois Institute of Technology, has taught chemical engineering, is a frequent reviewer for several technical journals, and has served as a National Science Foundation panelist to guide government funding for projects. He holds numerous U.S. and international patents.

James Deane

Technology Licensing Specialist

Jim Deane is a Technology Licensing Specialist with the College of Engineering Office of Technology Transfer & Commercialization. He is responsible for the management of the College's intellectual property, ranging from patent filing decisions, patent management, marketing of disclosures, negotiating license agreements, and maintaining and monitoring existing agreements.

Dr. Deane received his Bachelor of Arts from Swarthmore College and Doctorate in Astrophysics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He conducted astronomical research at the University of London before returning to the States for his MBA from Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management. He then worked for eCornell, a distance-learning startup company and the Technology Transfer Division at Los Alamos National Laboratories.

At the Office of Technology Development at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Jim was the project manager responsible for licensing software, medical & imaging devices and other disclosures in the physical sciences, as well as developing startup companies around university technology and working with the Keenan Flagler Business School on several joint entrepreneurial programs.
