Tauber Institute for Global Operations
The Tauber Institute for Global Operations is a collaborative effort between the University of Michigan College of Engineering and the Business School. Tauber responds to the diverse needs of industry through customized overlays to existing degree programs, highly focused interdisciplinary research, and working partnerships with industry. Among its key objectives, the Institute seeks to educate the future leaders of manufacturing enterprises; attract highly talented students to careers in manufacturing; work with industry to develop challenging and rewarding career paths; promote and sponsor interdisciplinary courses and team projects; and provide financial support for manufacturing-related research at the University.
- Funding Sources
Tauber was initially created through a gift from Joel D. Tauber, founder and president of Tauber Enterprises. Additional leadership gifts have come from major manufacturers and foundations such as Alcoa, Inc., Allied Signal, Inc., The Boeing Company, DaimlerChrysler, Dell Computer Corporation, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation, and The Herrick Foundation. Through the Tauber Associates Program, business organizations of all sizes provide crucial financial support for scholarships and other program initiatives.
- Administrative Staff
Tauber's executive leadership includes a College of Engineering Co-Director, a Business School co-director, and an industry co-director. These three individuals are supported by a team of administrative professionals responsible for operations, program implementation, and fundraising/development.
- Advisory Committees
Industry input has played a crucial role in the evolution of Tauber. A Program Development Advisory Board, made up of committed industry leaders, was instrumental in shaping and launching the Institute. Currently, an Industry Advisory Board meets twice each year to provide guidance on overall program direction and assist Tauber in achieving its stated academic and research goals. A Student Advisory Board, with representation from each degree program, organizes special events such as manufacturing conferences and recruiting forums.
- Research Thrust Areas
- Education and Training
Students from five degree programs participate in Tauber. These degree programs are designed for those interested in pursuing a successful career in the manufacturing sector and contributing to the theory and practice of manufacturing. The five degree programs are :
- Dual degrees - MSE/MBA and Meng/MBA
- Engineering Global Leadership honors program (EGL) - BSE/MSE
- Engineering Graduate Program (EGP) - MSE/Meng
- MBA with a manufacturing concentration
The cornerstone of the Tauber experience is the Summer Team Project, an interdisciplinary team project under joint faculty direction at an industry site. Tauber also conducts team-based courses addressing operations management best practices, integrated product development, interdisciplinary decision making, and creative problem solving. Team training includes activities such as seminars, interactive lectures, the Ropes Course challenge, and workshops.
- Industry Membership
Corporate participation takes a variety of forms, including student/industry team projects and an Industry Advisory Board (see above). One of the most useful and powerful partnership options available to manufacturing organizations is the Tauber Associates Program. This multi-level partnership provides vital financial support for scholarships, fellowships, research projects, courses, and other program initiatives. There are three membership levels: Affiliates (gifts of $30,000 to $99,999 annually), Partners ($100,000 or more annually) and World Class Members (cumulative gifts in excess of $1 million). Industry Associates enjoy:
- Preferred access to Tauber students for purposes of recruiting
- Opportunities to interact with University of Michigan faculty
- Free admission to an annual conference sponsored by Tauber
- Pre-distribution copies (paper and electronic) of the Tauber Permanent Hire Resume Book
- Recognition in a variety of publications and events
- Invitations to promotional and recruiting events
