Center for Laser-Aided Intelligent Manufacturing

The Center for Laser-Aided Intelligent Manufacturing (CLAIM) is a university/corporate partnership dedicated to advancing the development of laser material processing for industrial applications and to facilitating the transfer of new technology to American industry. Through its dynamic, collaborative research program, the Center produces materials with novel properties and develops cost-effective processing methods. In addition, it serves as an incubator facility, enabling industry partners to develop optimal processes and applications without a major capital investment. As part of its mission, CLAIM offers a range of educational opportunities for students and practicing professionals.

  • Funding Sources

  • Administrative Staff
A team of administrators and technical specialists provides support for the Center's executive director, associate director and the many faculty, student, and industry researchers affiliated with CLAIM.

  • Advisory Committees

  • Research Thrust Areas
The Center takes an "atoms to applications" approach to research, allowing its agenda to be guided by real-world problems in laser-aided intelligent manufacturing. Major research projects focus on the development of in-situ process diagnostics and the use of intelligent controllers to integrate process modeling and diagnostics, with the goal of advancing smart machines with closed-loop control systems. CLAIM also maintains a database of worldwide research activities related to laser-aided intelligent manufacturing.

  • Education and Training
As a University of Michigan research center, CLAIM serves as a training facility for graduate and undergraduate engineering students. The Center also offers seminars, short courses, and advanced degree programs, both on site and via distance learning, for early- and mid-career industrial engineers.

  • Commercialization and Patents

  • Industry Membership
Interaction with industrial organizations is the cornerstone of the Center's mission, and CLAIM is structured to provide its industry partners with significant benefits, among them:
    • A state-of-the-art incubator facility for process development, ideal for validating laser processes and evaluating production parts
    • Short- and long-term training programs for engineering professionals
    • A carefully evaluated database covering the latest advances in laser-aided intelligent processing
    • An information clearinghouse offering courses, newsletters, publications, and regular technology updates
    • Access to highly skilled graduates of the College of Engineering
    • Problem-solving clinics and the consulting expertise of faculty
