Auxiliary Power Units to Reduce Idling in Diesel Engines

Michigan Engineering researchers in the Transportation Energy Center are demonstrating that, in a world where every bit or energy is becoming more precious, and every contaminating particle is making life more precarious, even an idling diesel engine offers an opportunity to improve the quality of life.

Materials Design at the Intersection of Nanotechnology and Energy

The material designs at the nanoscale play an integral part in a University of Michigan initiative that quite literally has the potential to revolutionize energy sources, moving the world from polluting and unsustainable sources, to clean energy technologies.

Materials and Systems for Hydrogen Production

One appealing way to enhance energy efficiency and demonstrate environmental responsibility is the fuel cell. However, the obstacles that stand in the way of commercializing fuel cells are monumental. One of the key obstacles is the availability of hydrogen to power the fuel cells – a problem to which Michigan Engineering researchers have an answer.

Low Temperature Combustion in the Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition Engine

The inefficient use of fossil fuels has far-reaching effects, including an increase in global warming, the heightening of international tension and skyrocketing fuel costs. Michigan Engineering researchers have developed an engine that relies on Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition, an efficient technology for fossil-fuel use.
