gretschDick Gretsch (BSE ME '30) received the first Charles W. Wrinn Economic Development Award from the Greater Danbury Chamber of Commerce on his 96th birthday.
dworskyLen Dworsky (BS CEE ‘36) wrote to remind us that he ran track in ‘36, swam and played water polo, and is still going strong at 90 as a professor emeritus in civil and environmental engineering at Cornell University.
hallRobert T. Hall (BSE AERO ‘42) wrote to say he’s “delighted to learn there will be a new Computer Science and Engineering building” and, at 86, is active in a new computer-based health business.

Martin Leiderman (BSE ME ‘44) told Michigan Engineer that, after a career as an engineer, he worked in marketing for Prudential Financial until he retired in 1978 to a condominium on the ocean in Boca Raton, FL.

William Retallick (BSE ChE ‘48) wrote to say that he’s vice president of research and development at Catacel Corp.

Harold L. Conrad (BS AERO ‘49) noted that, after a varied career in engineering, retail, real estate management and the environment, he retired and is still “going strong at 82.”

Hal Hultquist (BSE CEE ‘49) received the Harry S. Swearingen Award from the American Public Works Association.

Ray Pearlson (BSE NAME ‘49) has received the Elmer A. Sperry Award for “distinguished engineering contributions that have advanced transportation by land, sea or air.”

Leonard Williams (BSE CE ‘56) has received a commendation from the Sunnyvale, CA, City Council for 34 years of service as a fire department volunteer.

Franklin D. Lemkey (BSE MTL ‘60), a research associate with the International Center for Electron Beam Technology in Kiev, Ukraine, retired in 1999 and is now living in Florida.

Irving Miller (PhD ChE ‘60) retired from academia in 2000, and is now working part-time as director of corporate operations at BioTechPlex in Chicago, IL.

Thom Hodgson (BSE Sci ‘61, MBA ‘65, PhD IOE ‘70) has received the Frank & Lillian Gilbreth Award from the Institute of Industrial Engineers for “contributions to mankind through the use of industrial engineering.”

Dave Hixon (PhD ‘64) is retired and still doing some consulting in Big Bend, ND.

Marty Javinsky (MSE ChE ‘65, MSE AERO ‘66, PhD ChE ‘67) retired in 2003 after a 35-year career with Chevron. He’s given himself to golf and sends regards to all, past and present, in the department.

Leslie Loomans (BSE EE ‘66, MBA ‘73) has received the University of Michigan 2004 Distinguished Alumni Service Award.

Marlin Thomas (BSE EI ‘67, MS IOE ‘68, PhD ‘71) has received Purdue University’s Albert G. Holzman Distinguished Educator Award for “contributions significant to the industrial engineering profession.”

Paul J. Turinsky (MSE NERS ‘67, PhD ‘70) has received the Eugene P. Wigner Reactor Physicist Award from the American Nuclear Society. Professor Turninsky is department head of Nuclear Engineering at North Carolina State University.

Paul Atkins (BS AERO ‘71) has received the NASA Certificate of Appreciation “in recognition of outstanding engineering support” on space shuttle projects.

G. Jean Hoppert (CERTT ‘71, BSE ChE ‘71) retired from Masterfood, USA, in October 2004, and is now in private practice.

Michael L. Surmanian (BSE ChE ‘72, MM Management ‘76) has founded Diagnostic Consulting Network, LLC. He has founded four other companies in the past 15 years.

Vyto Kaunelis (BSE CEE ‘76, MSE ‘84) has joined Orchard, Hiltz & McCliment, Inc., as director of the Environmental and Water Resources Group.

Steve Pondell (BSE ChE ‘79) has assumed the position of director of manufacturing for Encysive Pharmaceuticals, a biotech firm in Houston, TX, where “golfing in December is a plus.”

S.K. Gupta (BSE NAME ‘81), vice president, Lockheed Martin, has received one of 14 Asian American Engineer of the Year Awards for 2004, presented by the Chinese Institute of Engineers/USA in conjunction with National Engineers Week.

Catherine Peters (BSE ChE ‘85) has been appointed associate dean of academic affairs in the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Princeton University.

Dan Gamota (BSE ChE ‘87, MSE MSE ‘90, PhD ‘92), one of 86 of the “nation’s brightest young engineers,” was selected to participate in the National Academy of Engineering’s 10th annual Frontiers of Engineering symposium. Gamota was named Dan Noble Fellow at Motorola for “vision and technology leadership.”

David Chang (BSE EE ‘88, MSE EE ‘89) was named director of Layer 1 Software development for the Texas Instruments 3G Wireless design center in San Diego, CA.

Mike Mettler (MBA ‘92) was named CEO of Polytorx, manufacturer of Helix, toothpick-sized twisted fibers that reinforce concrete.

Ted W. Morrison (BSE AERO ‘92) wrote to say he married Kristina Loehr.

Harriet Black Nembhard (MSE IOE ‘93, PhD ‘94)) has received the Armand V. Feigenbaum Medal from the American Society for Quality.

Deanna Thompson (BSE ChE ‘93), an assistant professor in biomedical engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, married in Michigan after an eight-week road trip through Alaska.

Matthew Birchmeier (BSE ChE ‘94), formerly a process development engineer with Pharmacia (Skokie, IL), has filled the same position with Pfizer (Kalamazoo, MI).

Dan Fuchs (MSE NAME ‘96), a captain in the Israeli Navy, is head of the Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Department in Tel-Aviv, Israel.

Brian Hornbuckle (MSE EE ‘97, PhD EE AOSS ‘03) has received the British Hydrological Society 2004 Prize for “Best Paper and Presentation by a Young Hydrologist.”

Carrie Worthen (BSE ChE ‘97), recently married and now living in Utah, is a health and safety services coordinator for the University of Utah Health and Safety Department.

Matt Daily (BSE ChE ‘98) has married Roni Goldleaf, a fellow IBM Microelectronics employee. They honeymooned in Greece and live in Poughuag, NY.

Dane Elliott-Lewis (MSE AERO ‘98), lead engineer for General Electric Aircraft Engines, is working on gas turbine preliminary design in Lynn, MA.

Don Gualdoni (BSE ChE ‘98) has accepted a position as an associate in the Miami, FL, office of McKinsey & Co.

Sarah (nee Cunningham) Kusisto (BSE ChE ‘98), a process engineer at Illumina, in San Diego, CA, has married Brendan, a nuclear engineering officer on the USS Nimitz.

Jason Lee (MSE ME ‘98, MEng Manufacturing) accepted an 18-month appointment as executive director for the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program via the Ford Motor Company Executive Loan program.

Helena (nee Hennighausen) Schiavone (BSE ChE ‘98), a five-year employee at Nektar Therapeutics in San Carlos, CA, has given birth to nine-pound, six-ounce son Gabriel Dante.

Michael Sproule (BSE ChE ‘98) has joined Visteon Corporation’s advanced materials department. He wedded Diahann Pearson in fall 2003.

Kevin Sullivan (BSE CEE ‘98), ran for Canada in the 2004 Olympic games. He finished ninth in the second heat of the semifinal 1,500-meter and missed qualifying for the final.

Andrea (nee Bologna) Barringer (BSE ChE ‘99), a sales account manager at Lear Corporation, has given birth to Jonathon Thomas Barringer.

Thomas Kaminski (BSE ChE ‘99), an Accenture employee, married in Ann Arbor in May 2004, then moved to Durham, NC, and is working in the company’s Raleigh office.

LaRuth McAfee (BSE ChE ‘99) has received the 2004 Dr. Martin Luther King Award at MIT.

Kristen (nee Walkush) Yeh (BSE ChE ‘99) has given birth to Nathan Hao-Ran and is enjoying her “new career as a stay-at-home mom.”

Rebecca Aron (BSE ChE ‘01, MSE BME ‘02) spent a couple of years working for Guidant Corporation and is now back in Ann Arbor attending the University of Michigan Medical School.

Brian Carion (BSE ME ‘01, MSE ‘02) bicycled 3,400 miles, Los Angeles to Boston. Read an account of his journey at www.me.engin.umich.edu/news/pubs/ mechanica/fall2002/stud_bike.shtml.

Brian Boals (MSE CEE ‘02) has joined the Municipal Engineering group of Orchard, Hiltz & McCliment, Inc.

Jessica Motyl (BSE ChE ‘02), a process engineer for General Electric infrastructure, water and process technologies, lives in Oceanside, CA, and is training to compete in triathlons.

Tamika L. Young (BSE ChE ‘02), a new mother in July 2003, has accepted a position as corporate environmental engineer with Masco Corporation.

S. Kelvin Lau (BSE ChE ‘03, MEng PharmEng ‘03) moved to Worcester, MA, and took a position at Abbott Bioresearch Center.

Jessica Mattis (BSE ChE ‘04) has taken a position in General Motors’ paint and polymers engineering department.
