Gerard Faeth -- Dynamic and Distinguished

faeth Gerard Faeth, recently appointed the Arthur B. Modine Distinguished University Professor of Aerospace Engineering, passed away January 24, 2005, at 68. Also a professor of mechanical engineering, Faeth was known internationally for his numerous, diverse and lasting research and educational contributions to engineering and the sciences. His research advanced the work of other researchers and practicing engineers, worldwide. He was a recipient of the Stephen S. Attwood Award and the Sir Alfred C. Edgerton Gold Medal. He was also a fellow of four
professional societies and a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

Thomas M. Donahue -- Pioneer of Space Exploration

donahue Thomas M. Donahue, the Edward H. White II Distinguished University Professor of Planetary Science, died October 16, 2004, at 83. He joined the University of Michigan in 1974 as department chair, Atmospheric and Oceanic Science. At the time of his death, he held emeritus appointments in the departments of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences, and Physics. A member of the National Academy of Sciences, and the UniversityÕs Henry Russel lecturer in 1986, Donahue participated in numerous space programs, including Apollo-17, Apollo-Soyuz, Voyager, Pioneer, Galileo and Cassini. He was widely read and fluent in several languages; he loved classical and folk music, tennis, gardening, birding and the outdoors, and was deeply devoted to his family.

Chen-To Tai -- Engineer and Educator

tai Chen-To Tai, professor emeritus in electrical and computer engineering, passed away July 30, 2004, at 88. He came to the University of Michigan in 1964 and, except for a two-year appointment in industry, he remained at Michigan Engineering for the rest of his career. Tai, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, had a lifelong love of tennis, Chinese literature, painting, calligraphy and music. In 2000, family and friends created the annual IEEE AP-S Chen-To Tai Distinguished Educator Award to honor his love of education.

Elaine Harden -- Assistant to Nine Deans

harden Elaine Harden, a 46-year employee at the University of Michigan, passed away December 25, 2004, at age 77. Harden served as the assistant to nine Michigan Engineering deans and was a devoted counselor to many students. When she retired in 1991, the College created the Elaine Harden Award to honor engineering student societies that best exemplify leadership and service.
