Collegiate Professorships for Beck, Kozyra, Li, Penner and Wight
| Five Michigan Engineering faculty have been appointed collegiate professors who -- like those former faculty who are the namesakes of these professorships -- have distinguished themselves in teaching, research and publication and have garnered national and often international acclaim. |

Robert Beck , professor, NAME, has been appointed the Herbert C. Sadler Collegiate Professor of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, named for Professor Herbert C. Sadler, the co-founder and first chair of the Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. (Mortimer E. Cooley was the other co-founder.) Beck is a former chair of the department and a fellow of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. | |

Janet Kozyra, research professor, AOSS, has been appointed the first recipient of the George Carignan Collegiate Research Professorship, named for Emeritus Professor George Carignan, the current interim associate dean for research. Kozyra is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union, associate editor of Geophysical Research Letters , the author or co-author of numerous publications, and a member of the Geospace Environmental Modeling Steering Committee for NSF's Atmospheric Sciences Division. | |

Victor Li , professor, CEE, MSE, has been appointed the E. Benjamin Wylie Collegiate Professor of Civil Engineering, a professorship established to honor E. Benjamin Wylie, a distinguished retired faculty member of Civil Engineering. Li is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Society of Civil Engineers and was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Technical University of Denmark in 2004. | |

Joyce Penner , professor, AOSS, has been appointed the Aksel Wiin-Nielsen Collegiate Professor of Atmospheric Sciences, named in honor of the first chair of the Department of Meteorology and Oceanography. Penner, a fellow of the American Geophysical Union, is the author or co-author of more than 200 refereed journal articles, book chapters and committee reports and has delivered lectures and papers around the world. | |

James Wight , professor, CEE, has been appointed the Frank E. Richart Jr. Collegiate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, which honors Professor Bill Richart, a former chair of the Department of Civil Engineering and the Walter J. Emmons Professor of Civil Engineering. Wight is a fellow of the American Concrete Institute and serves as chair of its Building Code Commission. He has received many awards for teaching excellence and is the author of three books and numerous journal articles. |
Herrin, Carignan and Gallimore Take New Leadership Roles

Gary Herrin , professor, IOE, has been appointed interim associate dean for undergraduate education. Herrin is a long-time IOE program advisor who, among other successful ventures, created an educational development program for first-year and undeclared Michigan Engineering students. |

George Carignan , research scientist emeritus, AOSS, has been appointed interim associate dean for research. He's a senior member of IEEE and a member of the American Geophysical Union. |

| Alec Gallimore, professor, AERO, has been named an associate dean for the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies. Gallimore is director of the Michigan Space Grant Consortium, a member of ASEE, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Gamma Tau and Sigma Xi. He is also the associate editor for AIAA Journal of Propulsion and Power. |

Peter Green - New Department Chair for MSE

Peter Green has assumed the chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Green joins the Michigan Engineering faculty from the University of Texas at Austin. | Eric Michielssen , professor, EECS, joins the College from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He's best known for his groundbreaking work on fast multipole methods for speeding up the simulation of electromagnetic scattering from complex structures. |

| Lutegarde Raskin , professor, CEE, joins Michigan from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. Her work addresses the linkage between water resources, waste management and molecular microbial detection technology for quality and operational needs. |

| Ioannis Brilakis , assistant professor, CEE, recently earned his PhD in construction management and computational science from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. His research interests focus on computing and information technologies for the architecture, engineering, construction and facilities management industries. |

| Jionghua (Judy) Jin , associate professor, IOE, joins the College from the University of Arizona. Her research focuses on quality engineering, which she broadly labels as "data fusion" and believes has applications in areas such as network intrusion detection, fraud detection and healthcare delivery. |

| Wei Lu , assistant professor, EECS, most recently served as a postdoctoral researcher in Harvard's Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology. His research focuses on electrical transport properties on one-dimensional systems formed in semiconductor nanowire heterostructures, and on nanowire-based nano-electromechanical systems. |

| Mark Van Oyen , associate professor, IOE, joins the College from Loyola University of Chicago and Northwestern University. His research concentrates on flexibility in production and the agility of service operations. He focuses on how flexibility is achieved through cross-trained workers and/or flexible machines. | ||
| Richard Rood , professor, AOSS, joins the College from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. His research interests range from climate modeling to data assimilation and atmospheric chemistry. He's a leader in Earth System science and climate research. |
