New $10-million Department of Energy center to focus on plasma research

A new center at the U-M College of Engineering will enable fundamental research on low-temperature plasmas--ionized gases with vast potential for practical technological advancements in fields such as energy, lighting, microelectronics and medicine. The Center for Predictive Control of Plasma Kinetics: Multi-phase and Bounded Systems is funded by a $10-million, 5-year grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.

Premier courseware of 2009: CATME/Team-Maker

Engineering Pathway has announced that Comprehensive Assessment of Team Member Effectiveness (CATME)/Team-Maker has been named Premier Courseware of 2009. CATME was created by a nationwide group of engineering educators, including Cindy Finelli, director of CRLT-North. The CATME and Team-Maker system is receiving heavy use, demonstrating that these tools fill a previously unmet need for managing teams and assessing team skill development. A total of 647 instructors are using the tool at 202 different institutions with 26,750 unique student users.

Student company gets grant to develop better replacement joints

A student engineering company has received a $16,700 grant to develop materials for longer-lasting hip replacement joints. The grant is from the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance and it will allow the students to improve upon the design of their magnetically-assisted artificial joint. Their technology operates on a similar conceptual basis as MagLev trains, which utilize electromagnetic forces to lower friction between the train and track. International partnership announces second round of transportation energy technology awards

An international collaboration between U-M and Fraunhofer has launched two more joint research teams to address the increasing global demand for more efficient and sustainable technologies for transportation. All proposals were peer-reviewed and judged on originality, scientific visibility and possible economic impact by Michigan Memorial Phoenix Energy Institute and Fraunhofer, together with the Office of the Vice President for Research.

Internet Observatory Report released by U-M, Arbor Networks and Merit Network

The the Internet Observatory Report is a landmark two-year study of global Internet traffic that offers detailed trend data and analysis. The report is the result of a two-year collaboration between U-M, Arbor Networks, and Merit Network. At U-M, research was led by Prof. Farnam Jahanian, Chair of CSE and co-founder of Arbor Networks, and graduate student Jon Oberheide.

Shepherd Intelligent Systems partners with Ann Arbor Transportation Authority to pilot "Magic Bus" spin-off

Shepherd Intelligent Systems (SIS), an innovative provider of real-time mobile and wireless public transportation tracking systems, has partnered with the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority (AATA) "TheRide" for a pilot project. SIS is one of a dozen student-run businesses that received start-up support from the University of Michigan College of Engineering's Center for Entrepreneurship and other local firms via the TechArb business incubator, where the young entrepreneurs shared space, equipment and ideas with one another.
