Human-powered submarine team sets school record
The U-M human-powered submarine team set a new school record of 5.056 knots at the 10th International Submarine Races in Bethesda, Maryland June 22-26. The previous record was set in 2007. The team's boat, Mercury, finished the 100-meter race course fourth in the single-person propeller category. It was the 5th-fastest boat in the competition of 20 teams. The team kept a blog of their experience. "It feels great to have raised the school record. We were a young and inexperienced team with most of the contributing members never having raced a submarine before, so the accomplishment feels that much better," said Mechanical Engineering student Stephen Curtis, who is the team manager.
