Students Blown Away by NCAA Weather Tournament

tornadolgFor the third year, AOSS is holding the NCAA Weather Dance, a game that challenges participants to choose which of the competing NCAA men's and women's basketball tournament campuses will be WARMER or COLDER on the scheduled game date.

Professor Perry Samson, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Atmospheric Science and AOSS associate chair, originally put together the tournament allegedly to prove that, as Mark Twain said, "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it."

"This year we have 161 K-12 teachers playing along, so far, and over 1,200 participants," Samson said. "The highest scoring K-12 teacher will be invited to join the University of Michigan/Texas Tech Storm Chasing team for a day in the field. Also this year my AOSS 102 class is competing with intro courses from a number of universities -- Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Michigan State and Florida State, so far. The prize? Bragging rights."
