Two CoE Students Receive MLK Spirit Awards
Nicole Campbell, a PhD candidate in Applied Physics, and Tiberius Moran-Lopez, a doctoral candidate in Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences, have received 2008 North Campus MLK Spirit Awards. The presentation was made during the 13th Annual North Campus Spirit of MLK Student Recognition Program, featuring a keynote address by George Shirley, one of America's most versatile tenors and enlightened musicians, as well as a teacher, lecturer and most recently narrator of national and international renown. Shirley, in the sprit of Dr. King, assured the audience that each was a “tenant in the domicile of the other."
Campbell has served on the Michigan Student Assembly working on voter registration efforts, supporting the the University affirmative action policy, opposing Proposal 2 in 2006 and investigating student privacy issues. Moran-Lopez is active in the Ypsilanti-University of Michigan College of Engineering Partnership Project in which graduate students collaborate with Ypsilanti High School teachers to better serve and encourage students experiencing scholastic difficulties.
Liana Mulholland, a junior in the School of Art and Design, also received a Spirit Award.
University-wide programs in honor of Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr., have encouraged students, faculty and staff to, in the words of Dr. King, “live together as brothers or perish together as fools.” Campuswide MLK programs will continue through February.
