Noll Appointed Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering

nollDoug Noll, professor, Biomedical Engineering (BME), has been appointed department chair for a five-year term beginning July 1, 2007, pending Regental approval. Noll had served as interim chair of the department since July 1, 2006.

Noll earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, summa cum laude, from Bucknell University in 1985 and his master's and doctoral degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford in 1986 and 1991, respectively. He began his academic career as an assistant professor of Radiology and then Electrical Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh in 1991, and in 1997 he was promoted to associate professor of Radiology. Noll started at Michigan in 1998 as an associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering; he was promoted to professor in the department in 2005. He is also a professor of Radiology and co-director of the Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) Laboratory.

Noll's research focuses on data acquisition and processing for imaging brain function. He collaborates with cognitive neuroscientists and statisticians on the design of acquisition and processing methods for fMRI experiments. His recent honors and awards include the BME Outstanding Achievement Award and the Trudy Huebner Service Excellence Award from the College of Engineering, and the Outstanding Teacher Award from the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine. Noll is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.
