The Michigan Engineering Formula SAE team broke out of a pack of 51 teams, taking nine awards during the 2006 Student Formula SAE competition and the 2006 FISITA (International Federation of Automotive Engineering Societies) World Cup.events held September 13 - 16 at the Ogasayama Sports Park, Aino, Fukuroi city.

• Third Place: Formula SAE of Japan (overall in the competition)
• Third Place: FISITA World Cup
• Governor of Shizuoka Prefecture Award (overall points based on evaluation scores for static inspections, acceleration, skid-pad, autocross, noise, fuel economy, safety and efforts to reduce vehicle weight)
• First Place: Spirit of Static Event Award (for overall static inspection score)
• Second Place: Presentation Award (for presentation of the business plan)
• First Place: Design Award (design inspection and presentation)
• Second Place: Autocross Award (autocross performance)
• Sixth Place: JAMA Chairman Award (overall points based on evaluation scores for design safety, passive safety, efforts to reduce vehicle weight, fuel economy, noise and sportsmanship)
• Third Place: Good Frame Design Award (excellence of vehicle frame)
  

The performance in Japan capped a tremendous year in which MRacing bolted to a Third-Place finish in a U.S. competition featuring 140 teams from 14 countries.

Dennis Assanis, Jon R. and Beverly S. Holt Professor of Engineering, chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, had nothing but praise for the team. “Our students deserve our wholehearted congratulations for their team spirit,” he said, “as well as their technical abilities and their stamina during the past year in the competitions held in the U.S. and abroad.” Assanis, who is also director of the Automotive Research Center (ARC), director of the W.E. Lay Automotive Laboratory, and co-director of the General Motors Engine Systems Research Collaborative Research Laboratory, went on to express his appreciation to the team's faculty advisor, Professor Volker Sick, Mechanical Engineering, for mentoring and counseling the student team members.

Each year, the MRacing team designs and builds an open-cockpit, single-seat formula-style racecar for the annual Formula SAE Competition, which consists of events in safety, cost, design, presentation, acceleration, skidpad, autocross and endurance.
