Andres Clarens and Tanya Gallegos, doctoral candidates in Civil and Environmental Engineering, took the top two awards in the Technical Paper Competition at the SHPE's 2005 National Technical & Career Conference (NTCC), January 5-9, in Dallas, Texas. Each student received a scholarship and other prizes.

Clarens's paper, “Comparison of Vegetable and Petroleum Base Oils in Metalworking Fluids Delivered in Aqueous and Carbon Dioxide Carriers,” earned a First Place finish. Gallegos's, “Reactive Ferrous Sulfide/Ferric Oxide Multi-Layer Films for Remediation of Arsenic Contaminated Groundwater,” took Second Place. More than 85 Hispanic graduate engineering students submitted entries for the competition. The NTCC, hosted by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), is the premier annual conference for Hispanic engineering students and professionals.

The College of Engineering was well represented at the SHPE conference with graduate recruitment coordinator Mike Nazareth moderating the National Graduate Student and Professionals Panel. Panelists included Gallegos, Engineering PhD student Manuel Hernandez and MBA student Juan Gonzalez. In coordination with the Ross School of Business, the College of Engineering staffed a booth in the exhibitor hall to meet with prospective graduate students. A contingent of SHPE undergraduate engineering students also attended.
